NEW YORK, OCTOBER 19, 2011 - New Tang Dynasty (NTD) Television expands the footprint of its broadcast to Asia today via a new Ku-band satellite channel on Koreasat-5:

Adding NTD’s signal on Koreasat-5 enables the audience in Taiwan, Korea, Japan, the Philippines, and the coastal audiences in China to receive news reporting in Chinese language that is not filtered and distorted by China’s official propaganda machinery. “Our successful Ku-band service resumption over Asia could not have happened without the joint effort of all the people who supported NTD,” stated NTD spokesperson Carrie Hung, “We express our heart-felt thanks to all of them.”

On June 16, 2008, NTD’s signal carrier Eutelsat abruptly terminated NTD’s broadcast over Asia under the guise of a “power anomaly” to its W5 satellite. Prior to this interruption, NTD was the only TV station broadcasting 24/7 uncensored programming into mainland China. After its signals went off the air, NTD received thousands of messages from viewers expressing their desire for information freedom.

As an independent TV broadcaster with no commercial ties inside China, NTD holds a unique distinction among Chinese-language media of being completely beyond the grasp of the Chinese communist regime’s editorial censorship. In the absence of the rule of law under China’s authoritarian regime, rampant official corruption is creating ever-increasing tension between the government and the people. The Chinese government invests an inordinate amount of resources to censor its online and offline media to cover up the flare-ups that result from these conflicts. NTD plays a vital role in informing the global Chinese community of events taking place in China.

After testing, NTD has confirmed the stability of its signal on Koreasat-5. The signal is receivable with 50-90cm dishes in its coverage areas. Meanwhile, NTD’s Asia Pacific Channel will continue its broadcast on the C-band of the ST-2 satellite to Asia.

To celebrate the fifth annual Chinese International Vocal Competition, New Tang Dynasty (NTD) Television will present the Future Stars Recital at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium, featuring world-renowned soprano Lucia Aliberti and past winners of NTD’s Chinese International Vocal and Violin Competitions.
     
Known as “the queen of belcanto,” Madame Aliberti is one of the world’s leading sopranos. She has performed at major theater and concert halls around the world and has collaborated with many leading conductors.  Madame Aliberti is a requested artist for international gala concerts and has performed for royalty and heads of state.  She will travel to New York to sing at Carnegie Hall’s Future Star Recital with NTD artists on Sunday, October 30.

The concert is preceded by NTD's 2011 Chinese International Vocal Competition, which takes place from October 28 to October 30 in Manhattan.  Madame Aliberti will conduct master classes for contestants of the competition on October 29.  The male and female gold-prize winners from the 2011 competition will join her in performance at the Carnegie Hall concert on October 30.

In addition to $30,000 in cash prizes, contestants will have the chance to win scholarships for advanced vocal study in Italy. The offers include master classes and concerts at the Florence Opera Academy and Sicilian Opera Academy, among others.

Artistic directors, producers, theater managers, and agents from the U.S., Europe, and Japan will attend NTD’s competition and concert, bringing with them audition/singing opportunities for the future stars of NTD's vocal competition.

August 16, 2011: Florence Opera Academy (FLOA) signed an agreement with NTD Television, to offer scholarships to three contestants at NTD’s 2011 International Chinese Vocal Competition.
 
FLOA's artistic director, Ms. Silvia Bossa, will come to New York to select the recipients during the competition in late October. The awardees, she said, will be recognized for "distinguished talents in interpreting Italian Opera."
 
Ms. Bossa contacted NTD upon hearing about NTD's upcoming International Chinese Vocal Competition at Carnegie Hall’s Isaac Stern Auditorium.
 
"Once I saw the mission of the competition is to promote traditional vocal arts of pure authenticity, pure goodness, and pure beauty, I knew immediately that this is a perfect match because this is exactly my life's philosophy," Ms. Bossa said.
 
A concert will be held for the recipients in Florence after their master class study.
 
Ms. Bossa believes NTD’s recitals at Carnegie Hall will be truly beneficial to these talented Chinese artists.
 
"Carnegie Hall is a place full of historic figures and great emotions. If a singer can perform there with his/her whole heart regardless of the results, the Carnegie experience will help him/her with his/her singing career.”

NEW YORK – On Thursday July 14, 2011, at 6pm ET, the United States Congress will have a special preview screening entitled “Free China: The Courage To Believe,” from the award winning director of “Tibet: Beyond Fear,” co-produced by NTD Television.
 
As one hundred million Chinese citizens quit the Communist Party and its related organizations and the Chinese regime escalates a crackdown on freedom activists, this timely film provides new information that connects China’s widespread human rights violations with systemic unfair trade practices and state sanctioned organ harvesting for profit.
 
The film also documents US companies that profit from enabling the Chinese leadership to suppress dissidents and sheds light on the recent lawsuit filed by the Human Rights Law Foundation against Cisco System for allegedly implementing an elaborate surveillance apparatus that has led to the detention and torture of many Chinese prisoners of conscience. Lawmakers will assess how to strengthen and enforce laws prohibiting the importation of goods made by forced labor as they identify major US companies that are complicit in human rights violations and examine how a cultural renaissance along with new internet technologies can promote freedom in China.

The Hong Kong Police illegally arrested two journalists reporting on a July 1 demonstration. One of the arrested journalists was Kiri Choy, an intern at the Hong Kong Bureau for New Tang Dynasty (NTD) Television. NTD condemns the unmerited arrest and detention of Ms. Choy, and demands an apology from the Hong Kong Police and the immediate removal of all charges and records against Ms. Choy as a result of its action.
 
On the night of July 1, despite identifying themselves as journalists, Ms. Choy and David Cheung, a citizen journalist with Green Radio, were detained by the police for being unable to produce their press cards.
 
“My employer (NTD) faxed my identity confirmation letter with a company seal to the police station shortly after I called my company. They refused to release me, giving the excuse that my ‘letter and company seal need to be verified as authentic’ even though my company had called them five times to do so,” said Ms. Choy.
 
“The Police treated me like a protestor, even using a charge of obstruction of a public place to arrest me.”
 
A seasoned police monitor, Hong Kong Human Rights Monitor Director Yuk Kai Law, was among the reporters and witnessed the event as police escorted the arrested protestors to police vehicles, “We clearly did not obstruct police, however they suddenly accused us of doing so and demanded to take us away with the excuse of obstructing their duties which is obviously not true.”
 
Despite repeated calls from NTD staff to the police station to confirm Ms. Choy’s identity as a journalist, the police held her for more than 10 hours. She was photographed, finger-printed and required to give a statement prior to her release; Ms. Choy was also required to report back to the police at a later date.
 
“A reporter cannot be treated like a criminal for performing her duties,” says NTD spokesperson Carrie Hung, “we are very concerned that this arrest sets another precedent in the continuing erosion of human rights in Hong Kong, under the watchful eyes of Beijing.”
 
“As I understand it, press freedom is enshrined in the constitution of Hong Kong, and Chapter 39, Section 5 of Police General Orders stipulates that police are not allowed to block camera lenses,” continues Ms. Hung, “Kiri had a right to report on the demonstration, but she was arbitrarily arrested.”
 
“To this date, Hong Kong Police refused to acknowledge that journalists were detained at the demonstration on July 1. Well, Kiri is a journalist, and the police must respect her rights as a journalist. We hope the Hong Kong Police will do the right thing and expunge Kiri’s records stemming from this unfortunate incident, acknowledge its mistake and take measures to guarantee press freedom going forward,” concludes Ms. Hung.

NEW YORK—On May 30, 2011, New Tang Dynasty Television launched a new English news program: NTD China News.

This 15-minute show offers the latest news and analysis from mainland China. It broadcasts on NTD Television Monday through Friday at 1:30pm EST. Creating an entire show every day dedicated to China news represents a significant increase in the quantity of the China news NTD has already been producing for years.

"NTD China News aims to give our viewers in the West broad insight into what's happening in a complex and rapidly changing China," said Matt Gnaizda, VP of Multilanguage Programming. "It's the kind of in-depth China news and analysis you can't find on other TV networks."

New York – On May 7, 2011, Indonesian police in Surabaya attacked a group of people participating in a peaceful event. At an outdoor event to celebrate World Falun Dafa Day, without provocation the police assaulted and arrested the participants. One of the victims in the assault is NTD News journalist Oscar Eko Nugroho, who was present to report on the event.
 
Some of the Indonesian police actions were recorded on camera. According to local witnesses, police also inflicted violence on journalists from SCTV and TRANS TV, as well as several Falun Gong practitioners who were peacefully participating in the event.
 
NTD condemns this unprovoked attack on its reporting staff, other reporters, and Falun Gong practitioners by the Indonesian police, and has written to the Indonesian government investigate this incident.
 
According to human rights lawyer, Dr. Terri Marsh, the Indonesian police have an obligation to respect the religious beliefs and practices of Indonesian citizens and residents under international law and the domestic law of Indonesia. As Marsh also noted, the arrest of journalists in Indonesia is as troubling as similar actions carried out more recently in the Mideast.
 
NTD President Zhong Lee has called on the Indonesian government to seriously investigate this matter and take action to protect the rights of its people to hold peaceful religious events without fear of arrest or violent reprisals. The Human Rights Law Foundation is filing an urgent action with the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion requesting that the UN also conduct an independent investigation into the arrest of Falun Gong believers in Indonesia during a peaceful religious celebration on May 7, 2011.

Los Angeles residents can now watch NTD Television on Verizon FiOS channel 489. Starting on Wednesday, April 13, Verizon FiOS began broadcasting NTD as a basic channel, available to Verizon FIOS customers in the Greater Los Angeles designated market.
 
This development is the latest in a series of distribution agreements between NTD and Verizon FiOS. NTD is also available on Verizon FiOS in Greater New York City.
 
NTD Executive Vice President Samuel Zhou welcomed the extension of NTD’s coverage on the Verizon FiOS network.
 
“We are excited about the new launch on Verizon FiOS in Los Angeles. Now NTD can serve even more audience members with its quality Chinese and English programming,” Mr. Zhou said.
 
About 12 million people in the United States identified themselves as Asian or part Asian in the 2010 Census. California has a large Asian population, and the Chinese population there increased around 25 percent over the decade 2000 to 2010. In Los Angeles County the Chinese population grew from 377,301 to 471,626, representing a 16 percent increase.

On October 30, 2011, NTD Television will host the finals of the Chinese International Vocal Competition at the Isaac Stern Auditorium in Carnegie Hall. This will commemorate five years of NTD hosting its cultural and artistic competitions in New York. Following the finals a special “Future Stars Recital” concert will be held at Carnegie Hall bringing together past winners from NTD’s vocal, piano and violin competitions, to mark the occasion.
 
The preliminaries for this year’s vocal competition will be held in Taipei, Taiwan, in August and in New York on Saturday, October 28. Vocal artists of Chinese descent from Asia, North America, South America, Australia and Europe are expected to participate in the New York semi finals. The finals will be held at Carnegie Hall in the morning on Sunday, October 30.
 
The female and male gold award winners will each receive $10,000 and will perform in the Future Stars Recital at the Isaac Stern Auditorium in Carnegie Hall on Sunday afternoon, October 30.

NTD Television is launching a new Internet-based channel specifically for the mainland Chinese audience on April 1. NTD's new China channel will broadcast uncensored news, talk shows, and news feature programs for Chinese viewers who have the ability to break China’s firewall using anti-censorship software.
 
Viewers will be able to watch some of NTD’s most popular programs, including Zooming In, Focus Talk, Inside China, Life Talk, Mainland News Dissector, News Click, NTD World News and China's Forbidden News.
 
NTD's Internet-based China Channel comes ahead of the restoration of our satellite broadcast to China. We would like to thank the Global Internet Freedom Consortium for developing the anti-censorship platforms FreeGate and UltraSurf that allow mainlanders to get around the firewall. Currently well over one million mainland Chinese visit NTD's website every month using these internet platforms.

NEW YORK, FEBRUARY 23, 2011—New Tang Dynasty Television has changed the abbreviated form of its name from "NTDTV" to "NTD."

 

Since July 2010, New Tang Dynasty Television has worked under a new abbreviated name and revised logos for a stronger brand label that is easier to remember and say.

 

The company's official trade name* remains "New Tang Dynasty Television." The following are acceptable terms:

 

  • "New Tang Dynasty Television"
  • "NTD" (preferred abbreviation)
  • "NTD Television"
  • "New Tang Dynasty (NTD) Television" (When the company name is introduced the first time in a document)

 

The name of the news division remains "NTD News."

 

The abbreviation "NTDTV" is no longer actively used, although materials published or created before July 2010 may still contain the old branding. They will be updated over the course of time where feasible.

 

NTD's website URL, www.ntdtv.com, will not change in the near future, given that it is already a well-established destination for our audience.

 
 

NTD Branding Changes Over Time:

 

2001-2002: Original Logo from when the company was still referred to as Universal Communications Network, before the trade name New Tang Dynasty Television was established in 2002.
2002-2010: Main NTDTV logos. In some versions, the golden Tang logo was centered above the text.
2002-2006: Alternate logo used on business cards and letterhead, phased out after 2006. In some versions, the red Tang logo was centered above the text.
2010-Present: Current logo. The shading of the Tang symbol, the typeface, and the spacing have all been changed. The second logo uses the new trade name abbreviation NTD. There is also now an official NTD News logo.

New York, New York - October 31, 2010: After a weekend of intense competition, Corin Lee, from The Juilliard School, took the gold award at New Tang Dynasty (NTD) Television’s Third Chinese International Violin Competition: a $5000 grand prize and a specially-crafted violin.
 
Mr. Lee hails from California, and is a fourth year undergraduate at The Juilliard School studying with Hyo Kang and Naoko Tanaka. He has performed with the Oakland Civic Orchestra, participated in the Yellow Barn Young Artists Program, California Summer Music, Great Mountains Music Festival and School, and the Music Academy of the West.
 
The silver award went to 22-year-old Zhang Jing, who is originally from Nanjing, China. Ms. Zhang started playing violin at the age of four, and has since acquired an impressive list of awards from national competitions in China and international competitions.
 
The bronze award went to Arianna Warsaw-Fan, who is currently completing her Masters at The Julliard School. Ms. Warsaw-Fan also started playing violin at a very young age -- just three years old -- at her own request.
 
Contestants started the competition with pieces by Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven, and wrapped up the contest with Paganini’s Caprices—among the most technically demanding works written for the violin. But it was Mr. Lee’s performance of a specially-commissioned piece, “Dedu,” which means “Be Saved” in Chinese, that made him the judge’s top pick.
 
Judge Chia-Chi Lin, said it was Mr. Lee’s unembellished style really made him stand out.
 
“In other competitions, they are looking for mostly virtuoso players. But I think what’s different with our competition is that we are looking for a special kind of character, and it’s beauty, and sincere, and honesty. And I think Corin Lee has that quality in him. He has that honesty—he plays the way he feels, and comfortably too."
 
Ms. Ching-ya Mahlen composed “Dedu” especially for NTD’s competition. She was on hand to watch the final round of the competition on Sunday, October 31 and said it was touching to hear the contestants play her piece.
 
 “There’s a story behind ‘Dedu.’ It's about the Falun Gong practitioners who were persecuted for their beliefs in China... I composed this piece for NTD’s competition, in order to introduce this music, and let more people know the story.”

She said each contestant brought something different to “Dedu.”

“Because each performer has different backgrounds and experiences in life, through playing with their hearts, they gave the audience different messages. While I was listening, I felt like they were telling their own stories,” she said.

Winners of NTD Television’s Third Chinese International Photography Competition Announced
 
 
Eighteen stunning photographs, each capturing a special moment in history, have received awards in New Tang Dynasty (NTD) Television’s Third Chinese International Photography Competition.
This year the competition had three categories: News and Global Events; Society and Humanity; and Nature and Landscapes.
New York resident, and a past winner of NTD’s competition, Edward Dai won the Gold Award for his entry “Hope Road” in the Society and Humanity category. His photograph shows Falun Gong practitioners’ “Divine Land Band” participating in a parade in Virginia in 2009.
A photographer from Mainland China won the Gold Award for his entry “Wonders on the Plateau” in the Nature and Landscapes category. The photograph captures a special event in the sky above a Tibetan pasture.
The Gold Award for News and Global Events went to Guil, a photographer from Thailand, for his entry “Afghanistan.” His photograph shows a U.S. soldier blowing bubbles with a small Afghani boy.
Almost 6000 photographic entries were received from 44 countries around the world. Of these, 151 photographs were selected to move through to the final judging phase. The very best photographic entries are currently on exhibit at the Calumet Photographic Gallery in Manhattan, New York, through December 24. The gallery is closed on Sundays.
The Chinese International Photography Competition is one of a series of international cultural arts contests hosted by NTD Television. Its purpose is to increase the sharing of cultural arts globally among Chinese who love photography, to uphold traditional Chinese arts philosophy, to promote artistic works portraying intrinsic reality while reflecting the qualities of compassion, gracefulness, light and righteousness. New York, NY (October 12, 2010) – A renaissance of traditional Chinese apparel will be showcased at the Metropolitan Pavilion in Manhattan, as part of New Tang Dynasty Television’s global cultural competition series.
 
The two one-hour runway shows feature 152 designs by 58 designers, including both men and women’s apparels from Tang, Song, and Ming Dynasties. They were the competition’s finalists chosen from close to 100 designers from around the world. Drawing on the apparel-design principles from China’s dynastic periods, these designs incorporate different fabrics, colors, patterns, accessories and construction techniques to evoke the spirit of Chinese culture from a bygone era.
 
In Chinese antiquity, clothing not only indicated a person’s social status but also incorporated deeper meanings and symbolism. For example, the simple straight seam through the back of a Shen-Yi, the casual wear of high officials and royal family members, indicated a person’s righteousness. If the clothes were cut from four pieces of fabric, this would symbolize the four seasons of the year.
 
Competition head judge Lu Wei says the competition represents an important revival of traditional Chinese culture. “NTD’s Han Couture Design Competition promotes traditional Chinese apparel that expresses pure kindness and beauty.”

NEW YORK – October 4, 2010 –On Sunday, October 3rd, Zhong Lee, president and Lijuan Ma, senior vice president of New Tang Dynasty Television, the producer of the 3rd NTD International Chinese Culinary Competition, presented 23 chefs with gold, silver, bronze and honorable mention medals in five categories of Chinese cuisine:  Shandong, Northeastern, Szechuan, Huaiyang and Cantonese. The winning chefs were from Australia, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan and the United States. The 15 medalists received monetary prizes: Gold medal received $10,000, silver $3,000 and bronze $1,000. Chefs from China were not permitted visas by their government to attend this international competition.
 
               The Third Annual NTD International Chinese Culinary Competition took place on Thursday, September 30 and Friday, October 1, 2010, with the master Chinese chefs from the world gathering at Duffy Square in New York City’s Times Square to compete. For two days, this unique open-air event transformed Duffy Square into ancient China’s Tang Dynasty capital, Chang-An, with Chinese architecture-inspired cooking stations and servers dressed in period-inspired costumes. The event was streamed live throughout the world and shown on NTD TV.
 
Similar to a sporting event, contestants cooked in front of a live audience during rounds of competition on September 30 and October 1. The public watched the chefs in action live and via large TV screens. Referees oversaw the technique and four judges selected the finalists and winners. In the preliminaries on Thursday, 35 contests competed; 17 were invited to move on to Friday’s finals. On Friday, these 17 chefs from Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan and the United States competed against 18 chefs from Taiwan who had earned their places earlier this summer in an Asia-Pacific Preliminary contest of 83 Taiwanese chefs in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. 

 

From Friday’s 35 finalists, who diced and sliced through monsoon-like weather, 15 were selected for medals and 8 for honorable mentions. These chefs then prepared the awards banquet on Sunday, October 3 at Pier 60 for 400 guests in an evening that celebrated traditional Chinese Culture.   The décor continued the theme of the ancient Chinese city of Chang-An and guests enjoyed a fashion show of Han-couture dynasty men’s and women’s fashion while classical Chinese music filled the room.
 
The goal of the three-day event is to foster greater understanding between Chinese and Western societies and promote appreciation and awareness of traditional Chinese culture.  By setting the standard for authenticity in Chinese culinary technique, the competition celebrates traditional Chinese cuisine and culinary culture in general.
 
About Chang-An Theme:
More than 1,200 years ago during the height of the Tang Dynasty, the capital city, Chang-An was the ultimate destination of the silk road, gathering cultural influences from across the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. People flocked to the city not only to trade but to view the latest arts and fashions – to see and be seen - creating the most cosmopolitan, bustling city of the time. Like New York City today, Chang-An was truly the capital of the world.
 
               This ancient city, Chang-An, was the inspiration for this three day event. Duffy Square in Times Square and Pier 60 were transformed with Chinese architecture-inspired mobile cooking stations, servers in period-inspired costumes, chop-sticks, art, fabrics and custom-made serving trays that two servers carried all captured the grandeur of traditional Chinese heritage.
 
Mobile Chinese Kitchens Used in Duffy Square:
Five mobile kitchens were created for this event; 4 with single-layer roofs and 1 with a double-layer roof. The dimensions for the double-roof kitchen are 15 feet tall (on trailer) and 11.5 feet wide (the widest part of the roof). The single-roof kitchen measures 13 feet tall and 10.5 feet wide. The kitchens were made by R.A.M.S. Mechanical Inc. in Corona Queens.
 
Presentation Tray to be Carried by Two Servers
The design for the tray was taken from the image of an ancient painting from Tang/Sung Dynasties (600 – 1000 AD). The painting depicts the emperor’s hunting/picnic scene. The working design with detailed dimensions  was created and a master craftsman in Taiwan handmade the trays. Servers were specially trained to carry the trays.

Brussels, October 8, 2010 - The Chinese delegation to the EU-China
Summit apparently called off a post-event press conference to avoid
taking questions from independent Chinese reporters, some working for
New Tang Dynasty (NTD) Television.  On October 6, NTD reporters were
initially denied entrance to the European Council building for "security
reasons." Prior to that time, these fully accredited reporters have had
unfettered access to cover EU events. When the NTD reporters were
finally admitted into the building, the press conference was promptly
canceled ostensibly due to scheduling delay.

However, the president of the International Press Association (API-IPA),
Lorenzo Consoli, revealed that the cancellation was due to "very strong
interference by the Chinese delegation on the EU organization, in order
to block access to independent Chinese media to the final press
conference of the EU-China summit. This explanation was later confirmed
by unnamed EU sources. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao was originally
scheduled to be at the press conference.

The manipulation by the Chinese delegation was quickly condemned by
API-IPA in a statement, "API condemns in the strongest possible terms
this latest attempt to censor the media." (for the entire statement,

NEW YORK – AUGUST 18, 2010 - The Third International Chinese Culinary Competition will take place on Thursday, September 30 and Friday, October 1, 2010, with master Chinese chefs from all over the world gathering at Duffy Square in New York City’s Times Square to compete in this prestigious event. For two days, this unique open-air event will transform Times Square into ancient China’s Tang Dynasty capital, Chang-An, with Chinese architecture-inspired cooking stations and servers dressed in period-inspired costumes. The Awards Banquet, held on Sunday, October 3rd at Pier 60, will include the same theme transporting guests back through time to witness Chinese food being prepared in traditional ways.
 
     More than 1,200 years ago during the height of the Tang Dynasty, the capital city, Chang-An was the ultimate destination of the silk road, gathering cultural influences from across the Middle East, Asia, and Europe. People flocked to the city not only to trade but to view the latest arts and fashions – to see and be seen - creating the most cosmopolitan, bustling city of the time. Like New York City today, Chang-An was truly the capital of the world.
 
     Similar to a sporting event, 5 chefs will be cooking in front of a live audience during the 7 to 8  rounds of competition on September 30 and October 1. The public will have a chance to watch the chefs in action in-person and via large TV screens. Onsite emcees will introduce the chefs and give a play-by-play of the entire competition. Referees will oversee the technique and judges will select the finalists and winners. By setting the standard for authenticity in Chinese culinary technique, the competition celebrates traditional Chinese cuisine and culinary culture in general.

 

     The master chefs gathering at the crossroads of the world in Times Square will compete in five major categories of Chinese cuisine:

 

Shandong cuisine widely acknowledged as the best known of traditional Chinese food presents dishes that Confucius might have tasted 2,500 years ago.

 

Northeastern cuisine features the earthy ingredients of the former Manchuria.

 

Szechuan cuisine showcases the fiery spices popular in China’s Southwestern region.

 

Huaiyang cuisine takes advantage of the bounty along China’s Huai and Yangtze Rivers.

 

Cantonese cuisine’s refinement is unparalleled anywhere.

 

     During the competition at Duffy Square in Times Square on Thursday and Friday, tickets for seated VIP Connoisseurs Tasting tables are available for purchase for $100 and $125 per person, for a three hour session.

 
     On Sunday, October 3, at Pier 60, from 5:30-9:30pm, there will be a sumptuous 10-course feast prepared by the competition winners. The theme of Chang-An, the ancient Tang Dynasty capital, will be continued at the Awards dinner. New Tang Dynasty (NTD) Television is launching a 24/7 Chinese language programming service in the Washington DC area in conjunction with WDCW. Starting on July 30, 2010, viewers in Washington DC, Maryland and Virginia will be able to receive NTD’s digital free-to-air signal on channel 50.3.

WDCW is the local affiliate of the CW Network in the Washington DC area. The station signed on in 1986 as WFTY, an independent station without network affiliation. In 1993, the station was purchased by Jasas Corporation and remained the last independent television station in Washington, DC. In the beginning of 1995, the station obtained an affiliation with the Warner Brothers (WB) Network, and in August of that year, changed the call letters from WFTY to the more appropriately- suited WBDC. New Tang Dynasty (NTD) Television, an independent Chinese TV broadcaster based in New York, is launching its first multi-language channel in Hawaii. NTD’s 24/7 programming will be available on Oceanic Time Warner Cable, channel 698, to more than 220,000 digital subscribers in Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai and the Big Island.
 
The launch comes 8 months after NTD landed on Time Warner’s digital cable network in New York City. In addition to Chinese programming in Mandarin and Cantonese, “we plan to make our programming more localized by adding local content and more English programming,” said Samuel Zhou, NTD’s Senior Vice President of public relations and development. “Our multi-language programming has grown rapidly in the past year. Paris, June 30, 2010 – After two weeks of deliberation, the Paris Court of Appeals (Tribunal de Grande Instance of Paris) reversed a lower court’s decision against New Tang Dynasty (NTD) Television. It ruled that an expert should be appointed to investigate Eutelsat’s termination of NTD’s China broadcast in June 2008.
 
In his ruling, presiding judge Mr. Marcel Foulon summarized the duties of an appointed expert were to determine the true cause of the broadcast termination, and whether NTD suffered any economic damage as a result of Eutelsat’s actions. This decision signals the court’s recognition of the formal business relationship that existed between NTD and Eutelsat in June 2008, and that NTD is entitled to a full accounting of the true cause of the termination of its satellite broadcasts to China. It also opens the door for NTD to receive compensations for damages it suffered.
 
“We welcome this decision,” stated NTD spokesperson Carrie Hung, “This is a first step toward exposing the truth. Hopefully Eutelsat eventually will see that cooperating with a totalitarian Chinese communist regime in limiting information freedom is a bad business decision.”
 
On June 16, 2008, Eutelsat abruptly terminated the NTD’s broadcast over mainland China under the guise of a “power anomaly” to its W5 satellite. On July 10, Paris based Reporters Sans Frontiere (RSF) published an investigative report, revealing the reason behind NTD’s broadcast interruption not to be technical as Eutelsat claimed, but a pre-meditated political move to appease the Chinese communist government. In order to curry favor with Beijing and pave the way for future business deals, Eutelsat Chairman and CEO Giuliano Berretta chose to shut down NTD’s broadcast mere weeks before the start of the 2008 Olympics.
 
In an earlier decision, the Paris Commercial Court had declined to hear the case on the grounds that NTD did not have a direct contractual relationship with Eutelsat at the time of the service termination.

Paris, June 9, 2010 - The Tribunal de Grande Instance of Paris is set to hear New Tang Dynasty (NTD) Television’s appeal on June 15, 2010 regarding Eutelsat’s termination of NTD’s China broadcast in June 2008. NTD is requesting the court to appoint an independent investigator to fully examine Eutelsat's June 2008 shutdown of NTD's satellite broadcasts to China.
In an earlier decision, the Paris Commercial Court had declined to hear the case on the grounds that NTD did not have a direct contractual relationship with Eutelsat at the time of the service termination. Although NTD had sub-leased its bandwidth from Eutelsat from a third party, NTD has documentations indicating that Eutelsat had negotiated its contract terms with NTD directly. Therefore NTD appeals to the Tribunal de Grande Instanceto review its petition based on its actual merits.
 
On June 16, 2008, Eutelsat abruptly terminated the NTD’s broadcast over mainland China under the guise of a “power anomaly” to its W5 satellite. With this precedence, Eutelsat has repeated its behavior on two subsequent occasions. In late 2009, Eutelsat forced BBC off its Hotbird 6 satellite due to jamming by the Iranian government, yet allowed the Iranian government to continue broadcasting on its Hotbird 8 satellite. Late in January 2010, Eutelsat backed out of an agreement to broadcast Georgia Public Broadcasting’s Russian-language First Caucasus (1-K) channel in favor of Russia’s state-controlled Gazprom Media Group. This move essentially helped Kremlin lock out all voices not sanctioned by the Russian government. Eutelsat has clearly demonstrated a descent on the slippery slope that brings censorship ever closer to Western Europe.
 
Since the termination of NTD’s broadcast to China, residents on mainland China have not been able to receive uncensored news reporting of daily events. Some of the notable events that have taken place since June 2008 include the spread of infectious diseases such as the H1N1 swine flu, the melamine-laced milk powder scandal, and countless civil rights protests taking place in China on a daily basis, to name a few.
 
NTD spokesperson Carrie Hung expressed confidence in its case if the evidence receives a full and fair hearing. "When we presented this same set of evidence to the European Parliament,” said Ms. Hung, “the MEPs found there was sufficient cause to pass a resolution censuring Eutelsat for its actions and calling for an independent investigation into the company’s conduct."

Nearly two years after Eutelsat SA discontinued its broadcast of New Tang Dynasty Television’s (NTDTV) signals into China, the French satellite company has taken another unequivocal stance that money trumps principles when it comes to business. Late in January 2010, Eutelsat backed out of an agreement to broadcast Georgia Public Broadcasting’s Russian-language First Caucasus (1-K) channel in favor of Russia’s state-controlled Gazprom Media Group. This move essentially helped Kremlin lock out all voices not sanctioned by the Russian government.
 
In 2008, Eutelsat shut down NTDTV’s China broadcast to win favors with Beijing. In late 2009, Eutelsat forced BBC off its Hotbird 6 satellite due to jamming by the Iranian government, yet allowed the Iranian government to continue broadcasting on its Hotbird 8 satellite. With the latest 1-K incident, Eutelsat demonstrates that it has clearly descended on the slippery slope that brings censorship ever closer to Western Europe.
 
As a company partly funded by French public money, Eutelsat is flaunting the UN Human Rights conventions and the Charter of Fundamental rights of the European Union. Laima Andrikiene MEP, Vice-Chairwoman of the Sub-Committee on Human Rights of the European Parliament, is alarmed by Eutelsat’s actions:"It is completely unacceptable that in the Europe of the 21st century we have censorships of news and information carried out by European broadcasting companies. We cannot accept that a European company, which should be operating on the basis of European norms of openness, transparency, and freedom of expression, can become a tool of manipulation by the Kremlin."
 
Although Eutelsat repeatedly claimed to have no political agenda in its business dealings, its actions had proven time and again exactly the opposite - it was more than ready to sacrifice the interests of independent broadcasters in favor of censors with deep pockets.
 
NTDTV strongly urges the people in France and the rest of Europe to speak in one voice to call on Eutelsat to restore NTDTV’s broadcast into China, and to restore the right-to-know of 1.3 billion people in China.
