Hundreds of swimmers dived into Hong Kong's Victoria Harbour on Sunday, reviving an annual tradition that started in 1906--but has been on hiatus since 1978 over pollution concerns.

The swimmers raced across the harbor, though for many, the event was more about fun than competition. Some who last participated in the 70s were glad to hop back into the drink.

[Wu, Swim Instructor]:
"Back then it was really festive. I was only in my 20s. I thought swimming in the harbor was really interesting because the Star Ferry would sail to and fro next to me."

Some worries remain over pollution levels--the water is cleaner than it had been, but E. Coli bacteria levels remain a cause for concern.

Traditionally the race took place in the middle of the harbor, but those are now far more crowded than they were three decades ago. The current route lay roughly one mile to the east side of the harbor.

Local media report that most swimmers took 20 to 30 minutes to complete the race.

Female golf players from around the world are gathering in Japan to participate in the World Ladies Championship Salonpas Cup.

The tournament is the first of four major tournaments in the Japan Ladies Professional Golfer's Association tour. Practice rounds are conducted Tuesday and Wednesday and the tournament begins on Thursday.

The tournament is being held at the Ibaraki Golf Club in Ibaraki, just south of Fukushima prefecture, which was badly hit in the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. Thousands of people have been evacuated from Fukushima, due to fears of radiation from a damaged nuclear plant.

Defending champion Morgan Pressel has returned to Japan for the tournament and is dispelling any fears about radiation from Fukushima.

[Morgan Pressel, Defending Champion]:
"I guess the only thing I'm worried about right now is an earthquake, because I've never felt an earthquake. I wouldn't know what it would feel like. But you know with the radiation, I think we're far enough out of the way and you know I felt like I really needed to come back and the country needs something like sports to lift it back up and give something people to be excited about."

The 22-year-old Floridian is making a monetary gesture to help those affected by the disaster.

[Morgan Pressel, Defending Champion]:
"I felt that Japan has given me a lot, so this week I will donate half of my earnings to the relief efforts through the American Red Cross. I'm really looking forward to play well and hopefully donating a lot of money. That's my goal this week for sure."

Na-Yeon Choi of South Korea is at the tournament for the first time. She hopes the event will help the Japanese people.

[Na-Yeon Choi, South Korean Golfer]:
"I know you guys are strong-hearted, so you guys will get better, everything, so I would like to keep positive for everybody."

The chair of the Japan Ladies Professional Golfer's Association Hiromi Kobayashi said she was very satisfied at the number of golfers who had decided to come to Japan to take part in the event.

[Hiromi Kobayashi, Japan Ladies Professional Golfer's Assoc.]:
"With the right information provided, the players came with their own knowledge and decisions for this tournament, and I am very thankful that a lot of players showed their willingness to support Japan and attend."

A number of other international sporting events were cancelled in the aftermath of Japan’s earthquake and tsunami.

Pakistan's Prime Minister, Yusuf Raza Gilani, arrived in the northern Indian town of Mohali today. He's there to meet his Indian counterpart--so they can watch the Cricket World Cup Semi Finals together.

The prime ministers are hoping to use today's game between India and Pakistan to mend relations shattered by the Mumbai attacks.
Scores of Pakistanis crossed one of the world's most militarized borders to travel to the stadium and millions of Indians have taken the day off work.

Besides watching cricket, the two prime ministers will discuss reviving a peace process in a conflict that's gone on for more than 60 years.

Attacks in Mumbai in 2008 heightened tensions between the two nations. New Delhi blames Pakistani militants in collusion with elements of the government, including Pakistan's spy agency, for the assault that killed dozens. In a major confidence-building measure ahead of the cricket match, it was agreed yesterday that Indian investigators would travel to Pakistan to probe the Mumbai attacks.

Finnish rally driver Juha Kankkunen likes to drive fast...really fast, which is why he was sitting behind the wheel of a heavily reinforced, six liter, 12 cylinder Bentley convertible on a track made of ice.

Kankkunen set the world speed record on ice in 2007 with a speed of 321.6 km/h, but here on the fifteen-kilometer long track built on Finland's frozen Baltic Sea, he wanted to better it, using bioethanol for fuel. For Bentley it was a chance to demonstrate that biofuel can perform just as effectively as conventional fuel.

The four-wheel drive Bentley had no problem. With the required two separate runs in opposite directions complete, officials were able to confirm that Kankkunen and the environmentally-friendly Bentley had hit a top speed of 330.695 kilometers per hour, setting a new world record.

The Cricket Association of Bengal is hoping to host three World Cup matches in Kolkata City starting from March 15.

The stadium lost the chance to host the India vs. England match on February 27 because construction work was not completed in time.

The secretary of the association says three members of the International Cricket Council team inspected the stadium on Monday.

The decision to move the England game to another venue angered many Indian cricket fans and they let their feelings be known to cricket officials.

Kolkata is due to host South Africa vs. Ireland on March 15, Ireland vs. the Netherlands on March 18 and Zimbabwe vs. Kenya on March 20.

The secretary of the cricket association is hopeful the venue will be approved for those games.

[Biswarup De, Secretary, Cricket Association of Bengal]:
"Actually we have shown everything, whatever may be according to the ICC guidelines -- from player box to media rooms, stadium, side screen, broadcasting cell, everything was shown."

The Japan Sumo Association canceled a tournament next month because of an investigation into match-fixing, the latest blow to a national sport tarnished by a series of scandals.

It is the first time the grand tournament, one of six each year, will be canceled since 1946, when the main stadium in Tokyo was renovated after damage during World War Two.

The ancient sport had been struggling to clean up its image following an illegal betting scandal with ties to gang members, as well as other incidents of assault and drug use.

Fans and sponsors have been leaving the once popular sport, the national broadcaster suspended telecasts last year due to a scandal, and now a tournament will be canceled.

The decision came after the government told parliament last week that three sumo wrestlers had admitted to involvement in match-fixing.

Police found emails listing 13 wrestlers that indicated some may have been involved in fixing matches, with wins possibly bought and sold for several thousand dollars per bout.

An independent committee was set up to investigate, but the association says it could take up to two months to submit a report.

The cancellation is the latest damaging blows to the sport, which last year saw Asashoryu, a former top-rank wrestler, forced to retire after assaulting a man, while widespread abuse of young trainees came to light in 2007 after the death of a 17-year-old wrestler.

Public broadcaster NHK canceled live television broadcasts of the tournament last July for the first time in more than 50 years after an illegal gambling scandal emerged.

A polo match turned ugly in India’s Jaipur City on Wednesday. The referee clashed with spectators during a match at the Rajasthan Polo Club grounds.

It happened during a polo match between an Army team of the 61st Cavalry and the Vodafone team.

The referee lashed out at the spectators when audience members started hooting and entered the game premises after two successive fouls were awarded to a player.

Several spectators were upset and claimed the referee was awarding numerous fouls to favor the Cavalry team.

A long-time polo spectator says such an incident had never been seen in the past.

[Ragopal Sharma, Spectator]:
"Two wrong fouls were awarded and then the public started hooting. They put horses over the public. It is the first time I have seen that in polo game horses have been used to threaten the public.”

To defend the referee, the polo club secretary says safety was the main concern.

[Digivjay Singh, Polo Club Secretary]:
"Nothing has happened. He went to request the spectators as they were continuously entering the ground. We have also been announcing that. Since last four to five days, we have been requesting the spectators not to enter the ground. Safety is the first priority of the umpires."

However, spectators want an apology from the referee for his behavior.

Jaipur has the royal tradition of polo that has attracted huge crowds.

Kalmadi walked out of the CBI headquarters without any comment.
In December last year, the CBI sleuths visited Kalmadi's residences in New Delhi and Pune City to search for papers as a part of their probe.
The CBI had also arrested three top members of the Organizing Committee after irregularities were revealed in payment of contracts for the Games.

In November, investigators also conducted raids and collected scores of documents from residences of Kalmadi's key aides.

Official estimates placed the costs of the Games at $2.5 billion, while unofficial estimates have reached over $13 billion, according to local media reports.

Described as a once in a lifetime polo event, the Golden Jubilee Cup tournament returned under the Royal Salute banner for a second year in Jodhpur, India last week.

The Maharaja of Jodhpur hosted the invitation 10-goal tournament. International teams competed on the historic polo field beneath the magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace.

The Royal Salute Maharaja of Jodhpur's Golden Jubilee Cup was won by the Jodhpur Knights in the final. While Jaipur and Delhi now host the largest tournaments on the Indian polo calendar, Jodhpur's season is indisputably the most exclusive, historic and traditional.

[Robert Mehn, Polo Player]:
"Without doubt this has been my most positive international polo experience. India is obviously such a fascinating country from a cultural standpoint and thanks to royal salute they've really brought together all the best elements of it, the exoticism, their tradition of polo."

Polo was first played in Jodhpur in 1889 and was mainly for high society. The Jodhpur Lancers, as they were known, were actually the first Indian polo team to travel abroad. A number of well known English men such as a young Winston Churchill and Lord Mountbatten have also played for the team.

However, the golden era for polo in Jodhpur in the 1920s and 1930s suffered something of a hiatus with the outbreak of World War II and never really recovered until the late 1990s.

This polo extravaganza saw eight teams do battle for Jodhpur's most coveted polo prize, the Royal Salute Maharaja of Jodhpur Golden Jubilee Cup. Following a fiercely contended four-day tournament, the top teams that emerged were Umaid Bhawan Palace, Hariana Polo Club, the Jodhpur Knights and Hyderbad Polo and Riding Club.

The afternoon of the final brought tradition and ceremony that whisked players and spectators back in time to the golden age of Indian pomp, pageantry and polo.

Classic vintage cars lined up before a packed grandstand before setting off in a convoy lead by His Highness the Maharaja. In a thrilling final the real star of the show was RK Singh who helped the Jodhpur Knights to beat Hyderbad Polo and Riding Club by 10 to 7 1/2 goals.

Sports and many outdoor activities had almost come to a standstill due to frequent shutdowns and prolonged curfews to prevent violence.

The children were not allowed to step out of their homes, so playing sports was not an option.

Youngsters have been given a chance to compete in rugby as a 20 team competition has been organized for teams from all over the valley.

[Iqbal Ahmad, President, Jammu & Kashmir Rugby Assoc.]:
"Sports activities almost stopped for six months because of the prolonged curfews in the valley. The children were not allowed to come out of their houses; even milk was not available for children, so there was no question of sports activities taking place. And now in such extreme cold conditions, the children have got a chance to participate in a tournament."

Girls have also taken an interest in playing rugby.

[Aqsa Mushtaq, Rugby Player]:
"If we continue practicing, then I have full confidence, that we can defeat the teams from outside as well."

Kashmir had witnessed massive demonstrations, ignited by separatists, against Indian rule this year for three months.

At least 100 stone-pelting protesters were killed in firing by the security forces.

Wild Oats XI was confirmed as the line winner of the 2010 Sydney to Hobart blue water classic on Wednesday after a protest was dismissed by the race committee.

The maxi yacht, skippered by Australian Mark Richards, crossed the line first in the Tasmanian capital for the fifth time in six years on Tuesday evening but was declared only provisional winner.

A protest had been launched earlier in the race after it was alleged that the crew had failed to alert their position by high frequency radio before entering the stormy Bass Strait.

Richards was delighted and relieved by the decision made by the race committee.

[Mark Richards, Skipper, Wild Oats]:
"You know, just like crossing the line yesterday, a fantastic feeling of relief. It's a big job and this was a tough Hobart, and the Wild Oats team did a fantastic job. Everyone has done a fantastic job and it's a great result for us."

The radio rule was introduced after a major storm sank five boats and killed six sailors in the race 12 years ago.

Japan is banking on sci-fi technology and the country's 'wow factor' to win the race to host the 2022 World Cup.

After all, only in Japan can you hire a cat for an hour and pet it while you have a coffee -- or better yet, while a robot boils your noodles for you.

FIFA’s executive committee will be meeting on December 2 in Zurich, Switzerland to choose the city for the 2022 tournament.

South Korea is also bidding again, along with the United States, Qatar, and Australia.

Japan's credentials are second to none, with all but the main stadiums already in place and still in pristine condition. The country's infrastructure ranks among the world's best.

Since the Bullet Train was unveiled before the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, Japan has been at the forefront of technology.

The world's third largest economy, Japan still retains a great deal of its traditional charm.

World Cup bidders plan to beam matches on to giant 3-D hologram-style screens in one of many hi-tech projects designed to amaze fans around the world during the 2022 tournament.

Translation earpieces will allow fans from different countries to interact, aided by devices to allow viewers to gather information by pointing to players on the pitch.

There are also plans to build an 80-thousand-seat main stadium on the outskirts of Osaka.

A Dead Horse Still Wins at Melbourne Cup

In Australia, the 150th Anniversary Celebrations of the first Melbourne Cup is taking place at Flemington Race Course. Recognised as one of the most prestigious and richest horse races in the world, it attracts international champions yet the battler still gets a chance. Traditionally it is fashion, fun and fine horses that make it the biggest party day of the year.

Martha Lynn, Irish Visitor:
“It is probably one of the biggest sporting events in the world, so I mean I couldn’t miss it, and I’ve come all the way from Ireland.”

And not even the occasional heavy downpour of rain can dampen the spirits.

Mark Robson, Race Goer:
“We’re here to celebrate the 150th running of the Melbourne cup…it is ‘the race that stops the nation’ everyone knows about it, it is world famous.”

Intrinsically linked with the Emirates Melbourne Cup Day is a horse called Phar Lap. In 1930 Phar Lap was a four year old. Andover four days of racing Phar Lap won on each day including the two mile Melbourne Cup.

Mark Robson, Race Goer:
“I think Phar Lap was a champion in his own right.”

Here outside the Visitors’ Centre at Flemington, the historian for the Victoria Racing Club explains why Australians revere an 80 year old horse and a dead one at that.

Andrew Lemon, Historian, Victorian Racing Club:
“It’s amazing standing here in front of Phar lap’s statue; it’s 80 years since he won the Melbourne Cup.”

During the Great Depression of the 19 30’s, times were hard. People were in need of something to cheer them up, when into the scene galloped a colt that was to excel in racing. His name was Phar Lap meaning ‘a bolt of light’.

Andrew Lemon, Historian, Victorian Racing Club:
“Phar lap seemed to just do things that no other horses could do. He kept on winning; he won in such a fantastic fashion.”

And so began a nation’s love affair with a race horse. The public saw him as a trier,
and a symbol of hope for the ‘poor Aussie battler’.

Andrew Lemon, Historian, Victorian Racing Club:
“And in a way he was giving a spirit of encouragement to people; they were looking for a hero.”

Before Phar Lap’s mysterious death in California in 1932, he’d won the wealthiest races in Australia and North America and had been proclaimed as one of the world’s greats.

Andrew Lemon, Historian Victorian Racing Club:
“All these conspiracy theories, what had really happened to Phar lap? In a way it doesn’t matter, he is a tragic hero who died young. And he’s very much remembered for his achievements both in Australia and in America.”

Whatever the winning stakes, whether a thousand pounds as in Phar Lap’s time or 6 million as it is now, the magic of this horse remains a highlight in the hearts of Australian people and in racing history.
