More than 100 well known VIPs from Vienna saw Shen Yun Performing Arts premiere at Vienna’s Wiener Stadthalle over the weekend.

Among them, Dr. Schäfer-Elmayer, the owner of the renowned Elmayer Dance School which choreographs the Vienna Opera Ball every year.

[Dr. Thomas Schäfer-Elmayer, Owner, Elmayer Dance School]:
“These wonderful, expressive choreographies on one side, and then danced by really enchanting people, they can move themselves, as you can see it quite, quite rarely.”

The president of the Ballet Club of the Vienna State Opera was impressed by the interaction between the digital backdrops and the dancers.

[Ingeborg Tichy-Luger, President, Ballet Club Vienna State Opera]:
“Really, the dancers are flying from heaven, coming down on the stage. Well, it is professional, elaborate, and of course highly professionally danced.”

[Christa Dukor Mayrhofer, Patron, Friends of Vienna State Opera]:
“I have expected a beautiful evening, but this is magnificent, which I’d have never expect. May I say why I'm this enthusiastic. The ladies' manner of movements with those little steps, I thought they were standing on a band-conveyor, like the way they moved. Then the absolute choreography, this is wonderful. It's not like a brunette, a blonde, a red, a green with their hair, but all the same cute heads. And it's like there is harmony in the movements, just adorable. And the for example when it comes to the backdrop, this wonderful backdrop, the landscape, is just stunning, so big. Due to such bliss, my eyes couldn't believe it.”

[Lorenz Coudenhove-Kalergi, Audience Member]:
“This is a successful premiere, I can tell seeing the faces of all the people which are now attending our VIP reception. Their being all smiles in their eyes from this wonderful performance.”

Shen Yun will perform at the Wiener Stadthalle until May 4th.
And it's important to keep it alive. Sometimes it's being referred that our culture comes from the orient someplace, Asia. So, in your Shen Yun you‘ve done such beautiful things. I love the costumes, they are so special, but I love the dancing, the precision, the music, the backdrops, everything is so alive and you know, it brings back the culture in a modern way.“

Shen Yun Performing Arts impressed audience members at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium over the weekend.

[Natalia Baulich, Dancer]:

“I was just in awe. There were tricks, there was everything. It was outstanding, I loved it.”

Stefan Vogel, an award-winning Latin dancer, enjoyed seeing Chinese classical dance.

[Stefan Vogel, Professional Dancer]:

“That kind of dancing has the lightness from ballet, but then the energy almost from martial arts. And it was a completely new experience for us.”

[Betty Jean Divall, Former Dancer]:

“I’ve been to China, but I’ve never seen anything like this. This is outstanding.”

Jill Johnson has seen the show before. This was her fourth time.

[Jill Johnson, Retired Soprano]:

“Beautiful. The scenery is beautiful and the costumes are wonderful and of course the dancers are marvelous. I enjoyed every bit of it.”

Aaron Goldhammer commented on the performance “Our Story” about the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China today.

[Aaron Goldhammer, Audience Member]:

“My family was in Auschwitz in the 2nd World War. I found the scene where the teacher was taken away by the security forces very, very telling from the story that I was taught. In 1944 my grandparents and family were also taken away for believing in certain beliefs. I found that very, very touching that a lot of that was still going on today in modern China.”

He said the dancers’ performance was really touching.

[Aaron Goldhammer, Audience Member]:

“We hope that despite any opposition from the Chinese government and any other forces around the world that this show continues to perform everywhere without any type of opposition, and that we should all live in freedom and hope for better times.”

Shen Yun Performing Arts gave its final show of the Swiss leg of its European tour on Sunday in Lausanne.

Fabrice Joly, an award-winning artist, shared his impressions of the performance.

[Fabrice Joly, Graphic Artist]:
“The plum flower dance with the fans… I thought that it was gorgeous, all the things they were able to do with that, it was very creative. And I also really liked the humor of the show, there were many amusing aspects, like the dance with the young monks, it was hilarious.”

Eloise Bernier, also an artist, said that Shen Yun could be a source of inspiration for her work.

[Eloise Bernier, Graphic Artist]:
“The colorful aspect, the composition of the dances and so on - they relate small stories. Just like a person telling a tale… an extremely colorful tale with music added. So, this can really be inspiring in creating oriental motifs.”

Ms. Bernier added that she found the show poetic and absorbing.

[Eloise Bernier, Graphic Artist]:
“It was interesting and poetic, very light and easy to watch. You don’t get the impression that you’re watching a two-hour show. Actually, it's really easy to look at, and pleasant. We let ourselves be carried away by the story and the music.”

On Thursday Shen Yun Performing Arts finished its two show run in Ludwigsburg, Germany.

For some in the audience it was their first experience with traditional Chinese culture. And they were curious what Shen Yun would be like. After seeing the show for the first time they told us how they liked it.

[Angelika Schlöndorff, Audience Member]:

“It has been worthwhile. I could not imagine what it’s about, but it is fantastic. I am very happy that I did this.“

[Jürgen Schmiedel, Audience Member]:

“For me it was impressive because it was absolutely new. I had no idea about Chinese dance.“

[Roswitha Schmiedel, Audience Member]:

“It was very appealing. Although I thought it would be quite unusual for me. But I liked it very much, and it was appealing to me.“

[Mr. & Mrs. Nehring, Audience Members]:

“I was astonished by the discipline, the charm and the grace. Of course the miraculous costumes and this splendor of colors.“

[Jürgen Schmiedel, Audience Member]:

“This was fascinating of course, the choreography and the whole performance, for me simply impressive.“

[Angelika Schlöndorff, Audience Member]:

“I found the Erhu incredibly great and also the tenor. Actually, everything. I don’t know, I am still too impressed.“

It made quite the impression on members of the local art community.

[Gerhard Lewandowski, Painter & Graphic Artist]:
“Very inspiring. What I found especially interesting were the long sleeves of the women. I have seen the same sleeves on old Chinese terracotta with dancers. And I have rediscovered things which revive old memories.”
“During a visit in China the [terracotta] soldiers in Xi’an already impressed me very much. And I found it amazing that one could see them dancing vividly here.”
These two audience members highly recommend others to come and see the show.

The audience in Switzerland’s biggest venue - the Theatre de Beaulieu in Lausanne - gave Shen Yun Performing Arts a warm welcome on opening night Saturday.

[Nicolas Belleux, Medical Doctor]:

“I really like it, it's a fairytale. We are not used to this kind of show, and it captures our imagination. After watching the show, we feel more joy, more serenity. It's like a breath of fresh air! If one wants to spend a moment beyond time and space, one must see this show.”

This gymnastics instructor felt the gracefulness of the dancers come through in the performance.

[Svetlana Egorovba-Rossier, Gymnastics Instructor]:

“It's fabulous, really fabulous. I was so touched that I even had tears in my eyes. This grace, it's extraordinary. The technique... we could feel that the dancers practice Qigong, that they work with energies.”

Some in the audience have seen Shen Yun perform before. For Mrs. Clavier it's the 4th consecutive year that she's been to the show.

[Florence Clavier, Airline Committee Representative]:

“It's always very moving, we come back from the show with a lot of clarity, but at the same time lots of dreams, wellness and serenity. If there were more companies like this one, there might be more peace in the world.”

Shen Yun will stay in Switzerland for one more show. After that, the tour takes them to Ludwigsberg, Germany.

“I thought the message shed a light on some of the political aspects which are currently happening in China which of course censorship, which is of course in the free world, never been condoned. It’s good that a play such as this can involve a form of light entertainment while at the same time putting more serious messages behind that, such as the evils of censorship and - in the wider context - communism. It was very enjoyable from that point of view.”

[Stammy Cottakis, Housewife]:

“Well I loved what they sung and I loved what they stood for and I loved the spirit of the words and what the message was. To do with courage and loyalty and compassion and truth, and standing up for what you believe in.”

“Yan can cook, so can you.”

American Master Chef Martin Yan and host of the hit cooking program “Yan Can Cook, So Can You” has been an ambassador of Chinese cuisine since the 1980s.

As a Chinese-born American chef who has popularized Chinese cuisine in the West, Yan appreciates the role that food plays in discovering a culture.
[Martin Yan, Celebrity Chef]:
“It’s not just about learning a dish. From cooking and cuisine you can understand a country and nationality. You can understand the traditions, history and culture of a country.”

Yan has hosted several television programs dedicated to Asian cuisine. The founder of the Yan Can International Cooking School has also published a number of cook books and runs a restaurant chain in California.

In Hong Kong over the weekend, Yan endorsed NTD’s 4th International Chinese Culinary Competition.
[Martin Yan, Celebrity Chef]:
“I feel that your competition every year is promoting China’s culinary culture to the world, to the United State’s main stream society. It’s a great platform.”

The International Chinese Culinary Competition by NTD is dedicated to reviving traditional Chinese culinary techniques and culture. Chefs from around the world are invited to compete in five categories of Chinese cooking: Sichuan cuisine, Shandong cuisine, Cantonese cuisine, Huaiyang cuisine and Northeastern China cuisine.

Chef Yan believes rediscovering tradition is important for striving into the future, and hopes to be a part of the competition.
