Indian Hockey Team Grounded
And travel delays for India's women hockey team heading to the Champions Challenger Trophy in Russia. They couldn't leave the Indira Gandhi International airport today because they were denied transit visas.
India’s women’s hockey team will stay another night here because of a visa mix-up.
Lufthansa flight officials refused to allow them to board the plane.
[Surinder Kaur, Captain Indian Hockey Team]:female
"We weren't told anything. We came to the airport and realized that there were some problems with our visas because of which we had to leave for the hotel. We would be flying to Russia tomorrow."
The team was hoping to reach Kazan to acclimatize and train before the hockey tournament begins on June 21.
The teams coach says a direct flight via Moscow is being arranged.
[M.K Kaushik, Team Coach]:
"We had a stop over at Frankfurt for 10 to 12 hours but now if we can get a direct flight then our visit would just by two to three hours. It would be good if we have a direct flight via Moscow. Everything is normal and no there shouldn't be any controversy arising from it."
The Indian team will join Russia, Ukraine, Ireland, Malaysia, Belgium, Canada and Belarus in Kazan.
