Police in Peru were raiding a market selling illegal fireworks on Monday, ahead of the New Year celebrations.

One of the vendors of the illegal fireworks launched an explosive rocket at the officers, injuring seven of them.

80 police officers were involved in the raid when the attack happened.

[Wilber Davila, Police Officer Injured in Firework Explosion]:
"We were gathering the firework products and someone shouted, ‘is this what you want?’ and one of the fireworks burst hitting all my colleagues."

The firework used in the attack is known for launching small fragments when it explodes. This injured the police in their back, arms, legs and faces.

The injured officers were taken to a nearby hospital. Pieces of rocket were removed from under their skin and they were treated for other minor injuries.

Police had confiscated nearly a ton of illegal fireworks on the same morning of the attack. They say it is necessary to avoid injuries during holiday celebrations.

Both legal and illegal fireworks are popular among the people in Peru, as they celebrate Christmas and New year.
