Flooding and mudslides killed at least two people in the Peruvian tourist region of Cusco, home to the Machu Picchu Incan ruins.

Authorities met on Monday to discuss the possible declaration of a state of emergency.

Two thousand people have been affected by the floods. Local media reported a woman and her youngest son were killed when their home was torn apart by a mudslide.

Rescue workers removed the bodies of 52-year-old Isabel Cruz and her six-month-old son Ismael from the rubble.

Roads between Cusco city and Machu Picchu are closed and PeruRail, a train service that takes tourists to the ruins, suspended services and put into action an emergency plan.

Dozens of tourists and locals were stranded in the town of Aguas Calientes, located between Cusco and Machu Picchu.

Other tour operators used road vehicles to ferry tourists to the mount, despite warnings the roads had been closed.

Other regions further north of Cusco were also affected. Vehicles were stranded in mudslides across Huanuco and Junin.

Locals had to make do with this hanging bridge after the main transport bridge had been brought down over the Huallaga River.

In Junin, laborers worked to clear mud from the train tracks linking the capital Lima to the city of Huancayo.
