Argentine Designers Cruise Fashion Trail on Flat Tires

Rolling into your major city dump are thousands of car tires that usually go to waste.

However, Argentine designers Debora and Roberto Piwnica have rolled those tires straight into their design studio, and out of the rubber, they create handbags, purses, belts and other accessories.

This brother-and-sister duo says they wanted to use recycled goods in their work.

[Debora Piwnica, Designer]:
"We wanted to start doing something with recycled goods. So we started to try different materials until we discovered the inner-tubes of car tires, which we thought was fabulous and we started making belts."

The Piwnica siblings founded the label Neumatica, which means "tire" in Spanish, five years ago.

It's not just car tires either; discarded rubber from bicycles, trucks and buses are also used, and nothing is wasted.

The designers make products where valves and patches are plainly visible, giving the products a truly authentic look.

[Roberto Piwnica, Designer]:
"It can take more than 500 years to decompose. And if they are burnt, they are toxic. So whatever destiny they could have is bad. So to turn them into products again, seemed to us [like] a contribution."

Debora or Roberto trawl the spare parts lot, looking for the tire inner-tubes needed to make their wares.

The rubber has to be cleaned, brushed, waxed and polished before the designers get started.

After that it is a matter of piecing the work together.

While the rubber is still on the road, it becomes slightly deformed from the heat; this produces varying textures in the material, which makes each product one-of-a-kind.

Debora and Roberto have won Latin America’s prestigious Puro Diseno award for their innovative designs.

Receiving the prize opened the door for their products that are now sold throughout Latin America, Europe, the U.S. and Australia.
