Buenos Aires was alive with the sights and sounds of its beloved Tango on Saturday. Young and old celebrate that UNESCO added the tango as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The city is hosting a tango extravaganza for which the Minister of Culture couldn't have picked a better time.
[Hernan Lombardi, Minister of Culture]:
"For us it is an honor to have headed up this presentation. It's an honor to have done it together with Montevideo, and we think we’re at an exceptional moment for the tango."
The origin of tango is disputed between Argentina and Uruguay, as is the origins of one of its most famous composers, Carlos Gardel.
One resident recounts while dancing tango out on the town.
[Carlos Bucafuso, Resident]:
"Always, always! From the time I was little, in my house you could hear my parents’ tangos. It was the only music they listened to at home. I am happy."
The tradition of the dance and music from this region has its roots in the lower class neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, Argentina and Montevideo, Uruguay.
