Americans cast their votes Tuesday -- in elections that could sweep Democrats from power in Congress, and slam the brakes on President Barack Obama's legislative agenda.

Opinion polls and analysts project Republican gains of at least 50 House seats -- far more than the 39 they need to topple Democratic House speaker Nancy Pelosi from power.

Here in Arlington, Virginia, voters weigh in.

[Louis Kast, Voter]:
"There are a lot of issues with regards to the management of the economic conditions, the employment conditions, the taxes and everything else. The Republicans are still for only one thing: for themselves - not for guys like me."

[Daniel Welch, Voter]:
"Nobody's going to get the message. I mean, I hope Republicans take control so they have some ownership of this now and that Obama has to work with them going forward."

Republican candidates have pushed an agenda of spending cuts, deficit reduction, and the repeal of at least portions of the healthcare overhaul.

The GOP is also expected to make gains in the Senate, although it appears unlikely -- but not impossible -- for them to pick up the ten seats they need for a majority.
