New Yorkers Enjoy Dumpster Dipping

A swimming pool is a swimming pool - except when it's a New York City dumpster.
Manhattan's Park Avenue turned into Pool Avenue when three large garbage dumpsters graced the street, offering bathers relief from a scorching New York summer.
The city's Transportation Commissioner, Janette Sadik-Khan said the dumpsters made a huge splash last year when they debuted in Brooklyn.
[Janette Sadik-Khan, Transportation Commissioner, New York City]:
"I think it says a lot about the imagination of New Yorkers to come take a look at this iconic structure that you see all over New York City -- a dumpster -- and imagine it to be a pool."
So, how do so many people fit into three, 8 by 22-foot pools?
[Jane Walls, New Yorker]:
"You have twenty minutes to swim, it's free. It's so much fun. The buildings are over you, you're on Park Avenue. It's perfect, it's a perfect thing to do on a Saturday morning in the summer."
[Paula Rosen, New Yorker]:
"This is amazing. It's just a New York thing and only a New Yorker could do this. Nobody at home will believe that I swam in a dumpster, and this is so much fun. We call ourselves the dumpster diving divas."
The pools, which are lined with plastic and surrounded by a deck, will be open on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m., until August 21st.
So, get out your bathing suits and water toys and prepare to take the plunge.
