Oil Spill Covers 3 Miles of Florida Coastline

Florida's coastline sees the worst impact from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill yet.

Here at Pensacola Beach, a pudding-like mixture of oil covered 5 kilometres of coastline, where before only small tar balls had occasionally washed up.

Officials say the cleanup could take days even if no more oil appeared.

The handful of sunbathers here on Wednesday was struck by the smell.

[Gary Deshazo, Pensacola Resident]:
"I jumped in my car this morning, drove out here, and immediately the smell hits you in the face. It's like you're pulling up to a gas station to get gas and it's never been like that around here."

Meanwhile wildlife in the Louisiana Bayou continues to struggle with the spill.

Various white birds have gained a yellow tinge to their wings and struggled to take flight.

Booms used to stop the spread line the shore, but wildlife workers say some have become oversaturated trapping small crabs.

[Jaine, Matyas, National Wildlife Federation]:
"They're filled with crabs sitting on top trying to escape this oil. They too are completely covered. We scooped them up in our hands and they are completely sticky and covered. Normally you couldn't catch them, they move so quickly and they are slow as if you are trying to run as though your feet were stuck in molasses."

Meanwhile oil company BP says it has re-installed the containment cap on its leaking well which fell off in an accident with an undersea robot.

Even with this these repairs, scientists estimate uncaptured oil is spewing out at between 35,000 and 60,000 barrels a day.
