On Tuesday, Canadian Governor General Michaelle Jean met with relatives and friends in Jacmel, a town near Port-au-Prince. Jean's family has roots in Jacmel. The trip gave her a chance to hear about how the January 12 earthquake affected them.

Jean told the people of Jacmel they belonged to her family.

After some official meetings, Jean met with her friend Maile Alphonse, whose mother Magalie died in the earthquake. Alphonse's mother was Jean's godmother.

During a visit to the city center, Jean stopped in front of the family home, still standing.

At the end of the trip, Jean visited a military base providing health care where she heard a testimony from a student who survived the earthquake. Only seven students survived of a group of sixty-nine.

Jean was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1968, fleeing the dictatorial regime of Duvalier.

Jean became Canada's 27th Governor General in September 2005.
