Hundreds of visitors strolled around Jacob Javits Center in Midtown Manhattan, looking for exclusive deals and getaways at the New York Times Travel Show.
With more than 500 exhibitors, visitors can sample tours of the U.S., the Caribbean, and places further away and sometimes even more exotic, like Russia.
[Andrei Shuranov, Head, Russian-American Consulting Corp]:
"We have a very interesting new product, which we offer on the travel market. It is an all-inclusive tour of a kind, which is almost like a cruise, except you are traveling by train for 15 days from Moscow to Beijing. It includes food, a program of excursions; you will stop in a few cities on the way, take a tour of the city, do sightseeing and try tasty local cuisines."
This trans-Siberian charter train will stop in a number of Russian cities. Tourists can also check out some great outdoor attractions such as Lake Baikal, the largest fresh water lake in the world. That particular tour won’t start until the summer, but Russia is quite popular with foreigners even in the winter months.
[Andrei Shuranov, Head, Russian-American Consulting Corp]:
"Tourists are not afraid of the frost, in fact, Russian hospitality warms them up quite a bit."
Another way to experience the outdoors is the Nomadic Expeditions to Mongolia.
[Jalsa Urupshurow, Nomadic Expeditions]:
"It's the largest expanse of unspoiled beautiful land in the world. The eastern steppe of Mongolia is the largest unspoiled open grasslands on earth".
Natural beauty is not the only thing a tourist can enjoy in that country. We hear the food is quite good also.
[Jalsa Urupshurow, Nomadic Expeditions]:
"For example at the Three Camels Lodge we bake fresh bread every day, you can have anything from camel burgers to pizza. We have Western cuisine and Mongolian traditional dishes".
And there are some unusual arts among the locals.
[Jalsa Urupshurow, Nomadic Expeditions]:
"Mongolia is home to one of the most ancient arts called throat singing "khumi." It's where they vibrate their larynx and their vocal cords and they can sing with two voices, two sounds. It sounds like there is an instrument playing while they sing."
Apart from the exhibits, visitors at the show can watch cultural performances and attend seminars.
And if you are dreaming of your upcoming vacation, here are some ideas.
[Unidentified Woman]:
"Well, I think India is an exciting place, it's really incredible with the variety of things that they have there, including the majestic palaces, and just the nature, wildlife, like tigers and elephants".
[Unidentified Woman]:
"My very favorite thing in Alberta is the Canadian Rockies. You can ride horses, you can take a canoe down the river — my personal favorite is going hiking in the back country — you can go camping, stargazing is amazing ‘cause we have really nice clean air and the skies are astounding."
And where would you go?
