The tropical system churning off the Gulf Coast has caused flooding in 15 towns in Mexico’s southeastern Oaxaca State.
Authorities in the region reported on Saturday, September 26th that the Valle Nacional and the Papaloapan Rivers had overflowed affecting over 2,000 residents.
Police cruised the streets in boats in the town of Valle Nacional, ferrying local residents to safety after waters from the Valle Nacional River spilled into the town.
Flooding from the Papaloapan River kicked in to affect 14 more towns.
[Rafael Hernandez, Local Civil Protection Official]:
"We are looking at about 2100 people affected in the area around the Papaloapan River. There are rivers overflowing, most of all the Valle Nacional and Papaloapan rivers in Valle Nacional, Jalcatepec, Chiltepec, part of Tuxtepec and Santa Cruz."
More rain is in the forecast for the area and civil protection officials have alerted people living near rivers of the possibility of more flooding.
