Now, enviormental protection and combating climate change are issues that seem to be on everyone's mind. We visit the water keeper's alliance in New York City who concern themselves with exactly those issues. They invited some very speacial guests to talk about protecting the enviorment and the future of our planet. Let's take a look.
Robert F. Kennedy Jnr, the nephew of JFK, is the president and founder of the Waterkeeper Alliance, an international organization that is fighting for clean water by chasing down polluters around the globe.
And this week, waterkeepers from 19 countries met at SUNY Maritime College in New York City to celebrate 10 years of campaigning and to talk about climate change.
And Bobby Kennedy, as he is affectionately known, welcomed a special guest, the 42nd President of the United States.
Bill Clinton took the opportunity to show his support for President Barack Obama.
“I agree with your uncle, curiosity is important in a president. You have to want to know things. And you have to realize what you don’t know…. And that’s really important. And I am glad we have a curious president again.”
Kennedy explained why they invited Clinton to speak to the waterkeepers.
“And President Clinton, during his years in office, was one of the most vigorous supporters, protectors of those laws, of the statutory framework that we use to protect the environment.”
And Clinton addressed climate change skeptics.
“If over 95 per cent of all the informed opinion is on one side and less than 5 percent is on the other and the consequences of the decision are the future of the planet and what kind of life our children and grandchildren have, do you really want to take a chance on the 5 percent because he makes more money out if it today?...It’s better economics to do the right thing.”
And Clinton is not the only Waterkeeper celebrity supporter.
A trip in the Canadian wilderness with MacGyver saw him sign on. But it was after one of their group fell 15 feet down a rock face and he “MacGyvered” a stretcher out of duct tape.
[Karen Leihner, Waterkeeper Alliance Trustee]:
“And it was on that trip that Rick, Richard Dean Anderson, was able to say that yes, he really believes in Water Keeper Alliance, the work that we all do around the world, the 189 waterkeepers now, and he wanted to be a part of it and he became a member of our board and trustees.”
The Waterkeeper Alliance is campaigning for clean water through 189 projects on six continents. 19 countries were represented at the conference.
