Mandela great grand-daughter killed

Nelson Mandela's great grand-daughter has been killed in a car crash just hours before the World Cup was to kick off in South Africa.

 

The Nelson Mandela foundation has confirmed that the former president has now cancelled his appearance at the World Cup opening ceremony and inaugrual match.

 

Nelson Mandela Foundation Spokeperson:

"Nelson Mandela this morning learned of the tragic death of his great grand-daughter Zenabi Mandela, in a car accident. It would therefore be inappropriate for him to personally attend the 2010 FIFA World Cup opening celebrations. We are sure that South Africans and people all over the world will stand in solidarity with Mr Mandela and his family in the aftermath of this tragedy."

 

Zenani, one of Mandela's nine great grand-children, was killed just two days after her 13th birthday.

 

The accident happened after she had left after the offical world cup kick off concert- and provides a tragic note amidst the jubilation and excitement for the biggest sports event the continent has held.

 

South Africa fans felt Mandela's loss.

"How devastating it must be for Madiba, everyone was looking forward to seeing him at this game this afternoon and how tainted the day must be for him because it was such a joyous day for him."

 

Nelson Mandela, who was a hugley influential figure in bringing about the end to apartheid, is credited with helping South Africa win the race to host the World Cup.

 

Fans had hoped to see him at the opening match, despite the 91 year old's frail health.
