Zero Shadow Day in Pune City, India
Scientists and students witnessed an unusual event in India’s Pune City on Saturday… all shadows disappeared.
Known as zero shadow day, scientists along with students observed and experienced this unique event when the sun was exactly overhead at 12.30 p.m.
[Prakash Tupe, Scientist]:
"It happens twice every year, when the sun is exactly overhead, that is why shadows are negligible. Today we conducted some experiments in Pune and showed people."
It happens due to the northward and southward motion of the sun and when it's positioned at a 23 1/2 degree altitude… the sun's rays appear exactly overhead.
Apart from students, curious onlookers were thrilled to watch this celestial marvel.
[Suraj, Student]:
"Our shadow has deserted us today. It's a nice feeling."
The next zero shadow day is set for July 30th.
