2010-1-18 10:28

This lion dance competition at a Surabaya shopping center attracted 24 teams from East Java Province.

It's a traditional style contest and each team consists of six percussion music escorts while two create the lion.

[Chandra Wuriyanto, Chairman, East Java Lion Dance Club]:
“We organize this festival every year to develop Chinese culture. The lion dance is quite well known now in Indonesia. The players are not all Chinese… nowadays more indigenous people take part.”

In fact, most of the players were ethnic Indonesians and the number of Chinese players is down this year.

Chandra says this year’s lion dance competition has greatly improved and the players are brave enough to try some acrobatic moves.
