At Sydney's Taronga Zoo, Christmas came early for its animals Wednesday.

A hibiscus plant took the place of a traditional Christmas tree.

And under the tree special gifts were found for a smaller relative of the kangaroo, called the wallaby.

For them feasting on grevillea flowers and pinecones topped with peanut butter and grapes beats the lot.

Zoo director Cameron Kerr says nurturing their behavior is all part of the care.

"It's really just highlighting that important part of what zoos do in looking after the psychological as well as the physical health of the animals."

Jumilah, a six-year-old Sumatran tiger, eagerly opened her present.

Inside she found just what every tiger wants for Christmas, a big hunk of raw meat.
