London’s Beefeaters: What about These New Threads?
London's Beefeaters and their iconic uniforms haven't had a makeover since being appointed by Henry VIII as his personal bodyguard.
Five hundred years later, London's Design Museum has given them a futuristic spin with three new concept uniforms — designs which have yet to win over the Tower of London
wardens.
[Beefeater]:
"I have to be honest and say that I don't think that any of them would be really practical for today's use."
It was a visit to the Tower of London and a chance glimpse of England's first female Beefeater that inspired Poppy Totman to make her an outfit of her own.
[Costume Designer]:
"I also wanted to keep it quite traditional, the colors and the prints and reflect the history of the Tower as it’s such a long-standing thing."
As well as a female Beefeater outfit, there's one that's been inspired by the Ravens at the Tower of London, one with relatively straight lines complete with a pocket for a mobile phone and somewhat sinister head gear.
