Bystanders comforted one another as some remained in shock after at least 12 people were killed by a high-speed train, while crossing a track near Barcelona late on Wednesday night.
A group of mostly young people were on their way to a nearby beach to celebrate the annual Saint John's Day summer festival, when the accident happened.
Dozens of people had been attempting to cross the train track at an unauthorised point, instead of using an underpass.
[Unidentified Accident Witness]:
"The door was closed and we couldn't get through, so we tried to go through the side of the train track, and there was no light and nobody alerted us that the train was coming. There were more than 30 of us."
Emergency services found dismembered bodies scattered at the scene of the accident.
Bodies were removed, while the injured were rushed to hospital.
Three people are reportedly in critical condition.
The accident was the worst rail tragedy in Spain since 2003.
