Prague: Protest Against Chinese Toy Factories

2010-06-21 02:33

A peaceful protest was held in Prague, Czech Republic by the humanitarian group Stop Toying Around. The activists called on China to improve the living and working conditions of its toy factory workers.

A big teddy bear with the mark “Made in China” stands out on the street. He’s even been named.

[Michaela Chatrna, Stop Toying Around]:
“His name is Mr. Beda and he is looking for friends, those who will be willing to support this project.”

80 percent of world toy production is done in China due to low labor costs. But the working conditions are poor, as workers are forced to work up to 16 hours a day with low pay that can barely support a family.

[Michaela Chatrna, Stop Toying Around]:
“Fair trade is the focus. A lot of work is being done under conditions which are not at all fair to the people. So that is why we organize these kinds of campaigns.”

One protester says that consumers should be more aware when they shop.

[Veronika Bacovska, Coordinator, Fair Trade in Czech Republic]:
“I think that it is important to spread this idea also here in the Czech Republic.”
