Belgians Fear Possible Dissolution of Their Country

2010-06-14 01:48

Belgians vote in parliamentary elections that could set in motion the country's dissolution.

The New Flemish Alliance party backs the gradual dissolution of Belgium, and is favored to win big in Dutch-speaking Flanders.

Party leader, Bart De Wever, says federalism hasn't worked.

[Bart De Wever, Leader, New Flemish Alliance]:
"This country is totally blocked. We need urgent policies concerning immigration, concerning justice, concerning the budget and we have seen nothing the last three years. So reforms are needed quite urgently."

If De Wever wins, 180-year-old Belgium could disappear forever - but this isn't the only issue voters are focusing on.

Belgium faces a growing debt at a time when the euro zone is mired in financial crisis.

The Francophone Socialist Party is calling for unity among all parties in fixing the fragile economy.

There is fear that talk of dissolution could unsettle financial markets.

One voter said she was afraid of what the future might hold for Belgium.

[Florence, Voter]:
"For Belgium? We hope that Belgium will be united between Flemish and Francophones. Otherwise we don't know what will become of it. It is already so small if you divide it its serious. (Reporter asks: Are you scared of what might happen at these elections?) Yes we are very scared. We don't know what is awaiting us."

For the 7.7 million eligible voters here voting is mandatory, with fines given to those not casting ballots.

A clear picture of how Belgians voted is expected to emerge later on Sunday.
