Luxury Cars Come up to Green Speed

2010-03-04 16:13

Who said fast luxury cars can't be eco friendly?

Ferrari were among a number of top end auto makers unveiling cleaner, leaner hybrids at the Geneva car show.

Aston Martin went one step further.

As well as the Rapid, its latest $200 thousand dollar sports car, it also introduced the pint-sized Sygnet.

Unlike the rest of the brand, speed isn't a factor.

It's purpose, to reduce the companies CO2 output.

Something analysts say we're going to see a lot more of in the future.

[Christoph Sturmer, Director, IHS Global Insight]:

"When we look at the luxury side of green we're seeing extreme examples of green. One of the most extreme is the Porsche 918 Spyder which is a super high performance race car with three electric engines, a V8 gasoline. That one was the big surprise of the show and that's really the pinnacle of what green technology can do today. Hybrid is and green is the latest fashion in luxury so we're' going to see more and more of that."

It was hard to find a manufacturer that didn't have a smaller greener model.

Even Rolls Royce have brought out a mini Rolls, at least as mini as a Rolls Royce can be.

The Ghost still has an impressive 6.6 liter engine but it is the smallest car they've ever made.

It costs around $300,000 dollars to buy and the company's chief executive says it's attracting plenty of new customers.

[Tom Purves, CEO, Rolls Royce]:

"This time last year you've got to remember was pretty grey... it should be better now and I'm happy to say that it is. And also our new product is helping hugely.  We have 80 percent of customers who are showing interest and ordering these cars that have never had a Rolls Royce before."

If you don't have Rolls Royce money but would still like an eco-friendly luxury brand the Aston Martin Synet costs a mere $45,000 dollars.
