2009-12-11 09:39
This is the only educational institution in Ukraine for senior citizens. All the students are older than their teachers.
Today, they celebrate a special day
— Student's Day. People are singing folk songs, belly dancing and giving out awards.
Choral teacher Alexander Tatarchuk’s ensemble performance of “Rainbow” won first prize. He performed the piece with his students.
[Alexander Tatarchuk, Teacher of Choral Singing]:
"I want people to come to rehearsals not only to get knowledge, but for fun as well. They are unusual students. People who want to learn at this age come here knowing what they want.”
Although the "University of the Third Age" only runs for three months, there are more than nine hundred students.
Some go to school just to socialize with others.
[Zenaida Golub, Student]:
"It's very cool because you prepare for this everyday. You even do your hair. You're not sitting at the country house, but go and communicate with your friends. I already have many friends here; we call each other and look forward to getting together."
And others like to study.
[Michael Salenko, Student]:
"I already enrolled in all courses: healthy lifestyle, law, travel, choir, dances, even women's club "Spring."
Some students study human sciences and medicine. The teachers are impressed.
[Natalia Svechnikova, Professor of Medicine]:
"As you see, they want to learn, they want to know what they did not know before."
The founders of the university said that anyone with a pension certificate can attend the school for free.
[Elena Antonova, Deputy of Kyiv State Administration]:
"Every time I come here, I get a lot of energy."
The school has become successful, and its founders are thinking about opening similar institutions in other Ukrainian cities.
