UK Man Moves to Tree House

2009-11-02 08:54

Nick Weston is a 28-year-old former set designer. But he's better known for taking urban living to new heights.

He's ditched London life and built a tree house in a Sussex wood.

[Nick Weston, Designer]:
"I just found that I didn't really have the work and couldn't afford to live up in town, so this was something that I always wanted to do, try doing.  Try building a low impact house and try and be as self-sufficient and sustainable as possible, and really to try and live off wild food."

It took Nick just six weeks and 300 pounds to construct.

There's no indoor plumbing and Nick admits he doesn't wash that often, but as he's usually alone it doesn't really matter.

When he's not hunting for his next meal, he's writing his diary. Nick has just secured a publishing deal to write about his experience.

The advance pays for essentials such as paraffin and ammunition.

[Nick Weston, Designer]:
"The cost of living down here is phenomenally different from London.  I mean every time I step out my door here I don't spend a penny, every time I stepped out my door in London you spend at least a tenner on transport, food, whatever, whereas down here, I think my weekly expenditure is probably between 5 to 8 pounds."

He says most people in big towns don't know who their next door neighbor is.

Here Danny, the dairy farmer, is more than happy to swap the odd pint of milk for some of Nick's homemade cheese.

Nick grew up in the area and his mum lives nearby.

But he hasn't been home for a bath and has stayed true to his plan to live solely off the land for six months.

[Nick Weston, Designer]:
"I think I will miss the alone time, that's quite nice. You don't really appreciate it until I think you have it."

Nick may have some reservations about returning to the real world.

But he does have a fiancée waiting for him and she's not so keen on roasted squirrel or this kind of high-rise living.
