The Good Heart for Tanzania

2009-10-28 09:57

Ondra Horecky and his wife Tereza seem to be a regular, ordinary young couple. They’ve got a nice house, good jobs and a happy life. They can even prepare a great Green Thai Curry. But what  really makes them special are their big hearts. Over the last several years they’ve devoted most of their free time and financial resources to help people in Tanzania.

[Ondra Horecky, Volunteer in Tanzania]:
“Everything started in London one night when I was looking at the moon at that moment I decided that I want to go to Africa as a humanitarian volunteer.”

That was 2004. And every year since then another trip has been planed to Tanzania. But it wasn’t an easy beginning.

[Tereza Horecka, Volunteer in Tanzania]:
“When we got there the first impression was something totally different than I expected the filth, the people are different, also their mindset, basically everything is so different. But after spending three months there, the love for this place somehow rooted in my heart and it’s impossible not to return.”

The journey from Darasalama (the capitol city) to the countryside takes 12 hours. That’s where Ondra and Teraza coordinate their volunteer help.

[Onrda Horecky, Volunteer in Tanzania]:
“Villagers came to us and asked us for help. They had some ideas about what’s needed. We had discussions with them, and then decided what to do first. We decided to build the kindergarten.”

One private family project of the Horecky family is the financial support of a young girl Adela, who is an orphan.

[Tereza Horecka, Volunteer in Tanzania]:
“She just wrote me a letter saying that she is ill, but she studies hard. She wrote that she would like to be a doctor or engineer like she promised us, and that she is grateful for the chance we gave her. She also realized that education is her future.“

All their efforts, and good deeds, lead them to another person, Adriana Lukesova. She found out about Horeckys’ work and was so inspired and touched.

[Adriana Lukesova, Organizer]:
“I think it’s amazing these people exist, and I deeply admire them.”

With the help of others, Adriana Lukesova created a plan for different fundraising events. The funds will help Ondra and Tereza carry out some of their projects in Tanzania.

[Adriana Lukesova, Organizer]:
“At first I planned just one night for Africa but then I thought about it and it seemed to be not enough. So I suggested to the members of our association that at all of our events we could have this moneybox and do fundraising there. And then on June 2nd we will finish with a big concert for Africa.”

The first money is being put in the fundraising container – it’s a great start. With people like Ondra, Tereza and Adriana, dreams are coming true in Tanzania.
