Iberia Airline Workers on Strike

2009-10-27 07:37

In Spain, Iberia airline workers are on a two day strike over pay. Meanwhile, hundreds of national and international flights have been cancelled while the two sides hash it out.

The Spanish airline, Iberia, cancelled yesterday and today’s flights (October 27). Cabin crew workers are on strike over pay. Over four hundred flights have been cancelled over the two day strike.

Half of the cancellations hit the capital’s main airport Barajas. Iberia customers say they have received no compensation.

[Josefina Salazar, Stranded Passenger]:
"It is a big disruption. They had to send us with another airline. Here there are no customer rights. I come from Mexico. If this happens over there, they would give you compensation, at least a plane ticket. They proposed to us to stay one more day but they were unwilling to pay for the hotel so we lost the hotel in Rome. Really, I think they are backwards in this regard."

Iberia’s is in merger talks with British Airways and is planning for a new airline in two years time. The new strategic plan means new measures to boost revenue and cut costs to the company. To that end more lay-offs, salary freezes, and more union disputes are on the horizon.
