In a ceremony at the Swedish Parliament, four prize winners received The 2009 Right Livelihood Awards. This year’s awards go to people who work tirelessly for securing our common future.
[Marianne Anderson, Member of Jury]:
“We can say that the common name for what they are doing is survival, the survival of this earth and also for the people on this earth.”
Rene Ngongo from Congo-Kinshasa is honored for his work in preserving Congo’s rainforests.
Alyn Ware from New Zealand is recognized for his initiatives to rid the world of nuclear weapons.
Catherine Hamlin from Australia is awarded for treating African women’s medical conditions for 50 years.
And this year’s honorary award goes to David Suzuki from Canada, for raising awareness and addressing the perils of climate change.
The total prize is 150,000 Euros divided among the three winners.
The money is not for personal use, but for their ongoing successful work.
