Greenpeace Protestors Scale Parliament Building

Activists from the environmental group Greenpeace staged a protest in central London on Monday. They had camped out on the roof of one of the city’s most famous buildings, the Houses of Parliament.

Environmental group Greenpeace took their protests to new heights.

Protesters spent the night on the roof of the British Parliament, having set up camp here on Sunday.

Greenpeace said more than 50 of its activists scaled the roof of the UK Parliament building demanding the government do more in its fight against climate change.

The numbers dwindled on the second day of their protests as police led some people away.

The environmentalists staged their protest just as politicians were returning to work after their summer vacations.

Robin Oakley is head of Greenpeace's Climate and Energy campaign.

[Robin Oakley, Greenpeace Climate & Energy Head]:
"At the moment we've got international deadlock, because rich countries like Britain simply have not gone far enough in cutting their own emissions and in also promising to help developing countries. And poor people do more to clean up their economies and protect themselves from climate change. So, we're saying to all MP's today, come back and put climate change at the heart of policy making. We need politicians to look to the next generation, not just the next election.''

In December Britain will join other countries in Denmark to finalize an international agreement on green house emissions.

Meanwhile, as morning traffic buzzes in London, the nature of the protest has raised serious security concerns amongst legislators.
