Cannes film festival is the top destination for the entertainment industry.
But this year, a Burmese monk came to the French Riviera to set a candle vigil for his country’s democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Ashin Sopaka wants to highlight the Nobel Peace laureate’s trial ordeal in a Rangoon prison.
[Ashin Sopaka, Burmese Monk]:
"I came here to make awareness of Aung San Suu Kyi and more than 2,100 political prisoners. Cannes is very important because all around the world people are coming. It's a global village here, so I want to make awareness."
Sopaka knows that international pressure was the key factor in allowing diplomats and press into Suu Kyi’s trial on Wednesday.
But as the Burmese military junta closed the trial to the public on Thursday, the Burmese monk hopes the Cannes community will help make a difference.
