Water from melting snow swept over grasslands and roads, killing two people and affecting at least 400,000 people in northwest China. The region has experienced the heaviest snowstorms in six decades.
Snowstorms have affected nearly two million people in the region, killing as many as 30 people and causing economic losses as high as 390 million U.S. dollars.
The water continued to rise past record levels and has affected 22 counties and cities in the Xinjiang region. At least 15,000 people have been relocated. About 8,000 livestock died as a result of the harsh weather, causing economic damage of nearly 50 million U.S. dollars.
In China's south, torrential rains that raged throughout last week finally abated. Utility poles stood submerged in rushing water and bulldozers hurried to repair some of the damage.
In Guangdong Province, cars, trucks, and buses drove on flooded roads. Farmers struggled to cope with the damage as structures collapsed in rural areas.
Rainstorms have been ravaging southwestern and central China since Monday, stranding thousands. More flooding is expected in the region.
