Go Daddy to Stop Registering New China Websites

Google is not the only U.S. technology company that’s saying no to operating under increasingly strict Internet regulations in China.

Yesterday Internet domain registrar Go Daddy announced it would stop registering new .cn domain names—that’s the top-level domain for websites in mainland China. Go Daddy says it no longer wants to comply with the Chinese regime’s recent requirement that it disclose confidential information about people who register for domain names, including their photographs.

At a U.S. congressional hearing on Tuesday, Go Daddy Executive Vice-President Christine Jones said this:

[Christine Jones, Go Daddy Executive Vice-President]:
“We are concerned for the security of the individuals affected by CNNIC’s new requirements, as well as for the chilling effect we believe the requirements will have on new .cn domain name registrations. For these reasons, we have decided to discontinue offering new .cn domain names at this time.”

The world’s largest domain name registration company has said it will continue to host .cn domains for existing customers. Jones said the decision was not directly related to Google.
