Sweden has sentenced a Uighur man to 16 months in prison for spying on behalf of the Chinese regime.
62-year-old Babur Maihesuti gathered information on Uighur refugees and passed it to a Chinese intelligence officer—that’s what a court document showed on Monday.
It says the verdict was based on “strong” prosecuting evidence, including wiretapped phone conversations and interviews with witnesses.
The Chinese regime denies spying on political refugees living in Sweden.
Uighurs are a Muslim minority from China’s northwest region of Xinjiang. Many complain of cultural, religious and political suppression by the communist regime.
