Human Blood Plasma Used as Plant Fertilizer in Chengdu China

A blogger named “Lailai Huihui” posted a series of photos on a Chinese orchid trading forum on November 7th. The blogger boasts about using a “high protein fertilizer” for their plants.

The pictures show a bag of liquid being added to water. It is labeled as frozen human blood plasma from the Chengdu City Blood Center.

News of this quickly spread online, causing an uproar among netizens. Many wondered how it was possible for a private citizen to get blood plasma that is meant to be used for humans.

The Chengdu Health Bureau carried out an investigation and announced the results last week. They claim the blood was dispatched to an unnamed county blood bank, and transferred to a local mining hospital, also unnamed. Then an employee at that hospital discovered the plasma was spoiled, failed to follow disposal procedures, and gave the plasma to a friend.

But netizens doubt the plasma was spoiled because the label shows the blood was collected on October 3rd, and the frozen plasma was not due to expire until 2014.

Last Saturday, the Chongqing Evening News cited an insider who claims an employee at the Sichuan Petroleum Hospital has taken blood plasma home for his wife to use as orchid fertilizer. The insider says this has happened more than once.

One journalist has criticized the obscure language used by authorities in the investigation report and is not sure if anything is being done to prevent the same thing from happening again.
