The China National Meteorological Center says a cold snap is due to last until Wednesday, lowering temperatures in some areas by as much as 60 degrees Fahrenheit.
Morning commuters were feeling the cold as they had to make their way around Beijing's snowy pavements.
[Xiang Chen, Beijing Commuter]:
"It is indeed very cold. I didn't feel it this morning when I went out, but now I'm starting to feel really cold. I can't even feel my ears, hands or feet."
This is the second snowfall in Beijing this year. Last month Beijing experienced its heaviest snowfall in 40 years.
