CCTV is planning to repair its burned-out 700-million-dollar television complex in Beijing. Architect Ole Scheeren told the Associated Press that the building does not need to be torn down, despite the extensive fire damage.
In February this year, CCTV authorized powerful fireworks to be set off atop the building to celebrate the Lantern Festival. But the building, which was still under construction, caught fire. The huge blaze lasted several hours, killing at least one firefighter.
The incident prompted Chinese citizens to ridicule CCTV—an entity many dislike because it’s the main purveyor of the Communist Party’s propaganda. Netizens posted Photoshopped images like these, mocking CCTV and the whole incident it caused.
