Press Freedom Index - European Countries on Top

Reporters Without Borders’ annual Press Freedom Index is out.

It reflects violations of press freedom, not human rights abuses, between September 2008 and 2009. Censorship, including the media’s ability to investigate and offer criticism, is weighed into the score.

The highest score—representing the most press freedom—was shared by Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Norway, and Sweden. The lowest on the list was Eritrea, while communist North Korea, Cuba, China, and Vietnam were among the worst 10 out of 175 nations surveyed.

The report says the use of financial pressure and bribery were increasingly common this year.
