The north Australian city of Darwin is recovering from a record-setting cyclone that hammered the territorial capital on Wednesday.

The storm, Cyclone Carlos, dumped more than 20 centimeters of rain on Darwin in one 24-hour period, a record.

With winds up to 100 kilometers an hour, it downed trees, knocked out powerlines and forced officials to close the city's airport.

Some residents, mainly those forced from their homes, took refuge in temporary shelters Wednesday night, when the storm reached its peak.

[Unidentified Woman]:
"Oh yes, it was pretty blowing, yes."

People began leaving the shelters after Australia's meteorological bureau downgraded the storm to a tropical low on Thursday.

Elsewhere, life in the city of 120,000 is slowly returning to normal.
