Storm Slams Southeast Australia

2010-09-06 10:55

A major storm has left a trail of damage across Australia's south-eastern state of Victoria, causing the region's worst flooding in over a decade.

The deluge has caused rivers to overflow their banks, inundating hundreds of houses in northern Victoria towns.

Many people have fled their flooded homes, seeking refuge on higher ground.

But some residents stayed behind.

[Unidentified Resident]:

"It started building up across the road we thought nothing of it, then it just started coming and coming as you can see it is coming to the front of the house."

[Maggie Livingston, Flood Affected Resident]:

"That God he gets me through, God gets me through."

Strong winds have uprooted trees across the state, and falling branches have damaged parked cars.

Officials say around 200 millimeters of rain have fallen in one part of the region.

Rains are expected to continue over the coming days.
