Police Violence Ends Silent Student Protest in Kashmir, India

2010-06-14 01:50

Police on Sunday resorted to baton charge and stone-pelting on students protesting at an engineering institute in India's Jammu and Kashmir state.

Over 50 percent of the students of Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University in the Rajouri District had failed their first year examinations.

For one week, they were demanding a re-check of their papers, which finally lead to demonstrating on the college premises.

The students claim they were protesting silently, but the police resorted to violence.

[Tufail Ahmed, Student Protester]:
"They threw stones on us. They threw shells, there were so many casualities. They threw shells on students, as if, as if they were, as if  they were attacking terrorists.”

Injured students were rushed to a nearby hospital.

The police officials say two policemen were also injured in the clash.

[Sabbeer Chaudhary, Assistant Superintendent, Police]:
"At last, when they reached very near the center, we used police forces to disperse them.”

The students say talking to the Vice Chancellor does not help. The students are now seeking a clarification from Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, himself.
