2010-06-09 10:28

Two feet of snowfall at Rohtang pass in Himachal Pradesh blocked the Manali-Leh highway on Tuesday.

The highway connects India’s Himachal Pradesh and the Ladakh region of Kashmir.

Some tourists had to cancel plans and go back to Manali, but were happy to experience the snow.

[Rajnish, Tourist]: (
“Crossing the two passes, we had to go to Kaja, but there is too much rain and snowfall that we cannot go beyond Rohtang. We are planning to go back to Manali, but it's a worthy experience, we feel that we are in heaven.”

For others, the snowfall was a relief from the hot temperatures.

[Jitender, Tourist]:
“I am feeling very happy to experience the snow here. Usually snow falls in December or October. I am seeing snowfall in the month of June for the first time and feeling very happy.”

Snowfall in the region has further delayed reopening of the 300-mile Manali-Leh road.

The road is strategically important for the Indian Army.

Fresh snowfall has also lowered the temperature in other region of Himachal Pradesh.

Rohtang Pass, which is 13,000 feet above sea level, is a famous tourist spot of Manali.
