The Indonesia “Princess of Environment” Zukhriatul Hafizah,  together with Green Network Indonesia, held an environment preservation event in Jakarta on Saturday. After introducing the theme "One Man One Tree", 5000 tree trunks were distributed to members of the public in the area.

Thousands of brochures were handed out informing citizens of the importance of environmental conservation. Also included were guidelines explaining how to get involved and help protect the environment.

[Zukhriatul Hafizah, Indonesian “Princess of Environment”]:
“For all of my friends, for all young people in Indonesia, now it’s time to get involved and help protect our environment. If you don’t have love for your environment then you cannot help to safeguard this country’s next generation. So you must get involved, and you must have a green lifestlye. It is time to embrace the Movement and Action for Environment.”

According to the chairman of Green Network Indonesia, Transtoto Handadhari, deforestation in Indonesia has reached 2.83 million hectares per year. This has caused tremendous problems in many areas, including the extinction of rare flora and fauna, the natural disasters which are occuring every year, and the high levels of pollution in the air and water.

[Transtoto Handadhari, Green Network Indonesia]:
“I hope that by this event more people can become aware that our environment needs protection. One great way we can contribute to this is by planting trees. So today we are distributing trees, and through this we give people the opportunity to show their love for the environment.”

Indonesia has the 3rd largest tropical forest in the world after Brazil and the Republic of Congo in Africa. Indonesia tropical forest’s extends approximately 130 million hectares. But more than 40 million hectares of Indonesia tropical forest has already become bare forest, and more than 60 million hectares is in desperate need of rehabilitation.
