The chairman of Indonesia World Record Museum Jaya Suprana, together with Indonesian Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hassan, gives the world record-breaking charter to the Governor of Jakarta, Fauzi Bowo.

The charter is given to Governor Bowo for his successful efforts convincing entrepreneurs to convert gas stations into green spaces or city forests. This has been successful with 27 gas stations in five regions in Jakarta.

Of these 27 gas stations, 14 are already in the process of being converted, while the remaining 13 are targeted for completion by the end of 2010.

These converted gas stations are expected to provide around 10 acres more green space in Jakarta city.

[Fauzi Bowo, Governor of Jakarta]:
“Jakarta citizens now need the quality of life, they want their environment (to be) more beautiful, they want to live healthier, they want to sport more freely, and therefore we need more green space, and that is what we have done today. Because of that I want to thank everyone; if more people can support our effort, I think we can successful achieve our goal together.”

Currently, the percentage of green space in Jakarta has reached only 9%, or approximately only 22.5 square miles of Jakarta’s total area of 251 square miles.

The Jakarta city government has set a target of reaching 14% by 2020.

The Indonesian government has made a commitment to the international community to reduce its carbon emissions up to 26% by 2020.
