Somali Pirates Arrested After Attacking French Warship

2010-04-23 03:34

Six Somali pirates are arrested after they opened fire on the French warship, Somme on Monday night.

The attack took place 185 miles off the Somalian coast and involved two skiffs and a mother boat.

This is the second attack on the Somme by pirates in the area.

[Patrik Steiger, French Armed Forces Spokesman]:
"It's the second time this has happened to this vessel, the Somme. The Somme is a warship, it's a military vessel, but if you look at its profile it resembles a civilian ship. So we think it's a mistake rather than the pirates actually trying to target a military vessel.”

The captured pirates face heavy punishment, although the jurisdiction remains unclear.

Hopefully their colleagues will learn from their experience and not make the same mistake a third time.
