Bombs Bring Death to Burmese New Year Celebration

2010-04-16 11:35

Three bombs exploded in the former Myanmar capital of Yangon Thursday, killing at least 8 and injuring at least 75.

Bloodstains mark the sites of the blasts along Kandawgyi lake.

Large crowds had gathered to celebrate the water festival, which marks Burmese New Year.

The wounded were rushed to hospital for treatment.

There were no immediate claims of responsibility, though the ruling junta has in the past blamed bombings on anti-government dissident groups and ethnic rebels seeking autonomy in the former Burma.

Myanmar is expected to call an election later this year, though so far, no details have been released.
