Dozens of homes have been damaged, after Cyclone Tomas tore through Fiji's northern islands, with wind speeds of up to 205 kilometers an hour.

Some villages are reported to be entirely flattened and crop fields destroyed.

One Fijian is reported dead and a number of Australian tourists remained unaccounted for.

Fiji's Prime Minister, Frank Bainamarama, says the government's priority is to assess the damage and distribute emergency supplies.

[Frank Bainimarama, Fijian Prime Minister]:
"Government's first priority at this stage is to carry out an assessment to determine the full extent of the damage. While carrying out these assessments, emergency supplies including food and water shall be delivered to the affected regions."

New Zealand and Australia have pledged aid to Fiji and have started airlifting supplies to the hardest hit areas.
