Thai Protesters Shed Blood for Democracy

2010-03-17 10:48

Red-shirted protesters in Bangkok continued their rallies on Wednesday, demanding that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva's government hold fresh elections.

Tens of thousands of protesters have been camping out near Government House for four days but many of them expressed their frustration at Abhisit’s refusal to dissolve parliament and call fresh elections.

The protesters have been donating blood to spill outside the Prime Minister’s resident in what they’re calling a "symbolic shedding of blood for democracy."

On Tuesday protesters splashed hundreds of liters of their blood at Government House and Abhisit's Democrat Party office.

Some protesters say they’re frustrated about the seemingly ineffectiveness of the rally, even though 150,000 people gathered in Bangkok on Sunday, traveling mainly from the north and northeast provinces.

"We are nearly winning. They thought we would feel weak and would want to go home, but it is not like that. We are getting reinforcements. Yes, some have left, but they left to recharge themselves at home and then come back."

Some said they may soon return home because they cannot leave work and their family for long, but many say they will continue to fight for democracy.

"I will not give up. I have been fighting to reach this point, so I will continue fighting until we win and we get democracy."
