Sri Lanka's opposition leader and former army commander Sarath Fonseka is set to face a military tribunal Tuesday.

He was arrested last month and faces charges that he was engaged in politics while still head of the army.

Fonseka's wife, Anoma, attended an event held by his party the Democratic National Alliance which unveiled its political platform on Tuesday.

[Anoma Fonseka, General Fonseka’s Wife]:
“The whole world knows that my husband only respected justice and fair play. He was not a man for injustice. They have worked hard for a month to bring false charges against him. If these charges are true they could have brought these charges when he was arrested.”

Fonseka's supporters say the charges are politically motivated and aim prevent Fonseka from participating in parliamentary polls in April.

[Anoma Fonseka, General Fonseka’s Wife]:
"I will always respect the judiciary. But when I look at these charges I think it is a joke."

If convicted, he could face up to five years in jail.
