Southern Indian Space Center Attacked

2010-03-16 11:37

Two men fired at security guards outside a high security space center on the outskirts of Bangalore on Tuesday.

No injuries have been reported.

[Palaniappan Chidambaram, Indian Interior Ministry]:
"Preliminary reports say that two persons, presumably wearing some kind of a uniform, shot at the sentries from a distance of about 10 or 15 meters. The sentries fired back, sentries were not injured. I think a team is there investigating the matter but there was no danger to the establishment."

The government is looking into the attack and says it’s too early to link the incident to militants.

[Palaniappan Chidambaram, Indian Interior Ministry]:
"We will have to find out who these people were. It seems to be some kind of an amateurish attempt, shooting from a distance with presumably country pistols, but we will see. Nothing to be alarmed about, we will see as we get more information."

Officials say it’s too soon to draw conclusions on why the attack was carried out or who’s responsible.

[Palaniappan Chidambaram, Indian Interior Ministry]:
"Well what else do you call it at the moment? At the moment you can only call it as an attack - whether it was terrorist or somebody else we will know."

Police have launched a search for two men who fled the scene.
